Humans are sexual beings. We must be in order to continue our species. But sexuality is as varied as individuals. Throughout modern history, the dominant Western view has been that heterosexuality is normal and all other expressions of sexuality are abnormal. It wasn’t until 1973 that the American Psychological Association stopped listing homosexuality as a mental illness. Yet, many cultures across centuries include multiple sexual identities as normal. Recently, there has been increasing awareness that people can be other than heterosexual males or heterosexual females. At the same time, social activism around sexual identity has achieved significant milestones. In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Windsor that same-sex marriage was protected under the Due Process clause of the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. part 1) Question 1: Sociological Theories on Education Of the sociological theories that you have learned about, which one seems to be the most accurate view of what the American education system is like today? Why? Which one do you think is the least accurate? Why Use these two articles to response - Biddle_Berliner_Small_Class_Size And Allan_Madden_Methods Part 2) For this assignment, you will write about 2 pages discussing your educational experiences using a sociological perspective. In other words, how can sociology can help you make sense of some of your experiences? You can discuss a specific experience (like a conversation with a teacher), or you can talk about trends in your education over the years, or some combination of the two. The purpose is for you to step back from looking at your experiences as personal to you, and seeing how they may be part of broader social patterns. You can write about your experiences as a student, parent, and/or educator, and you can write about any point in your schooling - very early on, or recently, or both. Your autobiography must include connections from your experiences to at least two of the readings for this Unit and use at least one of the concepts introduced in the PowerPoint (separate from the readings). Make sure to specifically note when you are including a reading or a PowerPoint concept. EXAMPLE: "I definitely noticed that some students were being labeled in my elementary school class (Rist reading, 1/3/25-1/4/25). The teacher would frequently tell them that they were no good in math, and the students began to doubt themselves." EXAMPLE: "When my brother dropped out of high school, I thought it was due to his own problems. However, using the sociological imagination (Powerpoint 1/2/25) and seeing how high the dropout rate was at that high school, I now understand that there were broader issues like teacher quality and limited resources." These are just examples.

For this assignment, start by looking back at what you have learned about how social scientists study social movements, how social movements start, how they build a base of support, how they use frames and the media to get the word out, and how we evaluate the outcomes of movements. We have covered a lot of ground in this class! In your final assignment, you'll build on your Assignment 3, and speculate on the next stage of social justice movements. For example, consider the material from this week about how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the tactics and, potentially, the effectiveness of social justice movements. For this assignment, you will create one of the following: a 5-8 minute audio or video recorded PowerPoint/Google slides presentation. A PowerPoint/Google slides presentation with a script that would take approximately 5-8 minutes to go through. In your chosen medium, you will hypothesize about the future of social justice movements, using the following to guide your thinking. Choose one specific social movement from the list you used in the Week 7 discussion to help focus your ideas. Feel free to draw on some of the ideas you developed in your Week 6 Assignment: The State of Social Movements, as well. Instructions: Start with an introduction that clearly states your response to the question: What is the future of social justice movements? "(For example, are social justice movements going to be more prominent in politics? In popular culture? Are more or fewer people going to be involved?) How effective are social movements at changing society? Why? What movement tactics (framing, use of social media, protest, etc.) are the most effective for movements now? Why? Will these tactics continue to be useful in the future? Why or why not? Conclude by restating your thesis statement and summing up your main points. Then, predict your own future with social movements. Are you likely to start or continue to be involved in social movements? Why or why not? Are you likely to study them? Be sure to cite at least 3 of the resources from the course in your assignment to back up your ideas and provide a references page, slide, or poster area with APA references for all resources you used in your presentation. Part of your grade is based on your presentation of the material, so feel free to use images, clip art, etc.to help illustrate your points. If you download images from the internet, make sure that you cite where they came from! For help in creating a PowerPoint presentation, use the BEHS 250 Introduction to Slide Presentations document and the Creating a PowerPoint Presentation document in the required learning resources. Turnitin will be used to evaluate this assignment prior to grading. Please review the syllabus for more information about the use of Turnitin in this course.
