Essay Question/Prompt: What have you learned thus far about the ways in which the family norms change, as social contexts shift over time? Project Instructions (from syllabus) Los Angeles is a city that pulsates with immigrant life. As such, you are expected to write a research paper based on direct observation in Los Angeles. Pick a neighborhood, a place/space, or a series of events (not just a one-time event) that would allow you to observe a theme related to immigrant incorporation that we cover in class, such as work/employment, gender patterns, socioeconomic incorporation, social class, family life, neighborhood concentration, and social networks. You will need to conduct observations at least twice a week for at least over 4 weeks to grasp the theme well. You may also speak with the people in your observed spaces to better understand how they perceive their environment. Utopian Society Part 2 In Part 2 of the Utopian Society project (4–5 pages, worth 50 points), you will expand your sociological blueprint by detailing the institutions and systems that shape daily life in your imagined society. This paper focuses on how social structures such as family, education, media, economy, and government are organized to promote social order, cohesion, or transformation. You should explain how individuals are socialized, what is considered deviant, and how inequality is addressed or reproduced. Integrate key sociological theories and vocabulary—such as symbolic interactionism, labeling theory, and systems of inequality—to justify your institutional designs. Your society should reflect a sociologically informed vision that is both imaginative and theoretically grounded. Research Paper: Applying Sociological Theory Length: 6–8 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman) Overview This paper asks you to take a contemporary social phenomenon and analyze it through three different sociological theories. The goal is to see how theories illuminate (or fail to illuminate) social life, and to practice comparing theoretical perspectives. Please do not use more than one of the following (Conflict theory, functionalism, or symbolic interactionism)--Feel free to not use any of them and pick other theories from the text. Directions Choose a topic Examples: gentrification, gig economy work, social media influence, student loan debt, immigration, climate change activism, celebrity culture, etc. Select three theories At least one must be classical (e.g., Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Du Bois).
