Research Paper: Applying Sociological Theory Length: 6–8 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman) Overview This paper asks you to take a contemporary social phenomenon and analyze it through three different sociological theories. The goal is to see how theories illuminate (or fail to illuminate) social life, and to practice comparing theoretical perspectives. Please do not use more than one of the following (Conflict theory, functionalism, or symbolic interactionism)--Feel free to not use any of them and pick other theories from the text. Directions Choose a topic Examples: gentrification, gig economy work, social media influence, student loan debt, immigration, climate change activism, celebrity culture, etc. Select three theories At least one must be classical (e.g., Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Du Bois). At least one must be contemporary/critical (e.g., Feminist theory, Postmodernism, etc) The third can be any we’ve covered. Apply each theory Explain how the theorist would understand your topic. Identify what the theory highlights (what it helps us see). Point out limitations (what the theory misses). Compare and contrast How do these theoretical approaches overlap? Where do they diverge? Which theory do you find most useful, and why? Requirements 3+ scholarly sources (beyond class readings). Clear thesis statement. Organized structure: introduction, body (theory applications), comparison, conclusion. Proper citations (ASA) Evaluation Criteria Depth and accuracy of theoretical application. Clarity of argument and organization. Critical thinking (acknowledging strengths/limits). Use of evidence and sources. Writing mechanics (grammar, formatting, citations).
