Part 1. Introduce yourself to your fellow students and instructor. Briefly explain what degree you are pursuing, and include why and how you think taking this course will assist you in achieving your personal or professional goals. (I would like to be a hospital administrator.) Part 2. Provide an example of an ethical situation regarding health care you faced professionally or personally. How did you handle it? What, if anything, would you do differently? Be mindful of confidentiality and/or privacy considerations. Change names, titles, etc., as necessary. 2. Think of a time when, in your opinion, a healthcare provider did not treat you or someone you care about with a proper standard of care. For privacy reasons, you can use a pseudonym and/or not fully identify who the person is. Discuss as much about that experience as you feel comfortable with. How did it make you feel? How did you, or others around you, handle the situation? What legal and/or ethical theory was involved and/or violated? Your best answer will relate to concepts studied in the course to date—link to an outside resource if possible. 3.Medical charges are high as a result of the insurance monopolies over the healthcare industry. Doctors must accept what insurance companies, Medicaid and Medicare will pay if they want that business. Insurance companies dictate what they will pay. If a hospital charges $5,000.00 for a procedure, they will only be paid $1,000.00 or less for that charge, depending on their contract with that insurance company. Some of these contracts, Medicaid specifically, dictate that the hospital cannot charge the difference to the patient. Why is there such a misconception about the actual cost of health care and its roots? What is the solution? Is it ethical? If not, who is responsible for fixing it? How can it be fixed? Use Chapter 4 of Fremgen as a resource and supplement your post. Feel free to also use outside resources. 4. Consider the ethical, social, and medical implications of genetic testing, organ transplantation, and stem cell research. How do these advancements in biomedicine challenge our understanding of human identity, autonomy, and the allocation of resources in healthcare? How can society balance the potential benefits of these technologies and the ethical dilemmas they raise? Considering what we know about these dilemmas, how do you think AI might add to the complexity of these issues? 5. After watching the video documentary Unforgotten, what are your thoughts? Why do you think professionals like physicians and nurses felt institutions like Willow Brook were appropriate for care? Why did trusted community advisors, like priests and teachers, recommend this care? Is there a practice or procedure that exists today that you believe will be controversial in twenty-five years? If so, what is it and why? Really put thought into what practices or procedures occur today that might be considered barbaric, inhuman, or unethical in the near or distant future. Ensure your initial post is at least 500 words for this discussion, and each peer response is at least 200. This discussion is worth 7 points this week since no case study exists. 6. In the documentary 'Being Mortal,' we are confronted with complex ethical, medical, and societal issues related to aging, end-of-life care, and individual autonomy. Consider the various perspectives presented in the film, including those of healthcare professionals, patients, and family members. How do these perspectives intersect, and where do they diverge? What ethical dilemmas arise in the context of end-of-life decision-making, and how might different cultural, social, and economic factors influence these decisions? Furthermore, what policy changes or personal actions do you believe are necessary to address the challenges highlighted in the documentary and improve the quality of end-of-life care in our society? If you were a provider or administrator having to deal with these situations how would you address them? Ensure your initial post is at least 500 words for this post and each peer response is 200. 7. For this week's discussion, please respond to the following: 1. What aspects of this course did you find most enjoyable? 2. Were there any specific topics or areas that you wish we had covered but didn't? 3. After watching this week's videos and thinking about everything we have learned, what knowledge or concepts from this course will you apply in your future role as a healthcare provider or administrator?
