For the essay question portion of the final, prepare answers to 1, and choose EITHER 2 OR 3. Each answer should include at least 2 detailed examples which include the name of the object/site, artist, date, country, and a brief description (you do not need to be any more specific than details provided for images in text or on powerpoints). Your answer should reference information discussed in class and in the assigned readings. Make sure your example is relevant to the question AND relevant to the class (from Greek Roman, Early Jewish, Christian, Byzantine, Medieval, Islamic, Romanesque or Gothic). Choose 2 religious sites from different continents and compare how religious principles are expressed in the structure, layout and decoration. How do they tell the story of their beliefs in stone? Chapelle Answer 2 OR 3. From the Classical period onwards, we’ve looked at the development of the human figure and an increasing interest in naturalism. Compare 2 different figures from 2 different time periods and traditions and discuss the interest in naturalism (or not) as a part of the cultural context. Choose 2 works that show the progression from naturalistic forms to more stylized forms—or the progression from very un-naturalistic forms to more naturalistic forms. How are the differences a product of the cultural context? And last—what is something that links the two together? Possible examples to use: Greek kore/kouros figures, athletes, and pedimental sculptures, Roman copies of Greek works, politicians and portraits, Early Jewish and Christian frescoes and mosaics, Byzantine mosaics, Islamic and Medieval manuscripts Sacred texts and the art of the book are important themes across the globe during the Medieval period. Choose two manuscripts from different time periods (or the same time period but different traditions) and compare the use of text and image in both. What kind of style is used and why?
