To identify the common sources of sodium in the diet and learn ways to make heal ...

To identify the common sources of sodium in the diet and learn ways to make healthier food substitutions. As a nation we consume too much sodium in our foods. The DRI of 1500 mg for 19-50 year old adults is easily exceeded in the typical American diet. Average sodium intakes range from 2500-6000mg per day. Where most of the sodium in your diet comes from is often surprising. You would be wrong if you guessed the salt shaker. Most of our excess sodium comes from processed foods and dining out. Sodium is a flavor enhancer and we use it quite liberally. This activity will shed some light on where sodium is hidden when we eat out at restaurants. Directions Visit your favorite quick service restaurant or visit the restaurant's website and select a typical lunch or dinner. This meal MUST include an entree, side dish, and beverage. Ask for the nutrition information or visit their website (your text book data base also has this information) and list the following information for your meal: total kcalories; fat kcalories; saturated fat kcalories; and sodium content. Post your meal items with sodium content of each food on the discussion board. List the total sodium content of the meal. Write a paragraph on the nutritional aspects, especially sodium, of your meal. Do you feel this is a good meal choice? Respond substantively to two other student meals with your assessment of their meal selection. Identify what one food item you would suggest eliminating to help lower sodium.

The restaurant I selected is Pollo Tropical, and the meal I chose was the Grilled Chicken Cuban Sandwich with a side of Caesar salad and a cup of unsweetened iced tea. The grilled Chicken Cuban sandwich had 960 total calories, 510 of which come from fat, and had 19 g of saturated fat and 251 mg of sodium. The side dish had 210 total calories and 180 calories from fat; it had 4g of saturated fat and 320 mg of sodium. My drink had a total of 10 calories and no fat calories, saturated fat, or sodium. Overall, this meal has 1180 total calories, with 690 of those calories being from fat, 23 grams of saturated fat, and 571 milligrams of sodium. I feel this is a good meal choice in terms of sodium content, but I am worried about the calories. The daily recommended intake is 1500 mg, and my meal only hits 571 mg. This is only a third of what's recommended, making it a healthy option to keep sodium levels low. However, the daily recommended intake of calories is around 2000, but this meal goes over half of that. This can make it an unhealthy option for calory management. Reference: Menu. Pollo Tropical. (n.d.). https://www.pollotropical.com/menu Pedro Martinez Martinez Oct 28 12:30pm Reply from Pedro Martinez Martinez For this assignment, I selected Chili’s Grill & Bar, known for its flavorful, hearty meals. I focused on the Surf & Turf Ribeye, which combines a steak topped with shrimp and garlic butter, served with loaded mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. While the dish is protein-rich, it is also high in sodium and fat, making it a more indulgent choice. Meal Components and Nutritional Breakdown Table Component Calories (kcal) Sodium (mg) Total Fat (g) Saturated Fat (g) Protein (g) Surf & Turf Ribeye 690 2,280 41 17 78 Loaded Mashed Potatoes 350 1,100 12 5 6 Coca-Cola (Soft Drink) 150 35 0 0 0 Total 1,190 3,415 53 22 84 The Surf & Turf Ribeye meal packs a high amount of protein, supporting muscle maintenance and overall health. That said, it also contains a hefty 3,415 mg of sodium, more than twice the daily limit recommended at 1,500 mg, according to Eleanor Noss Whitney and Sharon Rady Rolfes in Understanding Nutrition. Consuming too much sodium can raise blood pressure and heighten the risk of cardiovascular issues, which is why managing sodium intake, especially from processed or restaurant foods, is essential (Whitney & Rolfes, 2022). Dishes at Chili’s Grill & Bar are typically seasoned to enhance flavor, but that comes with trade-offs. Ingredients like loaded mashed potatoes and buttery steak add not only more sodium but also saturated fat. While this meal is indulgent, it’s best enjoyed occasionally rather than regularly if you're aiming for a balanced diet. A practical swap, opting for a side of steamed broccoli instead of loaded potatoes, could lower both sodium and fat without taking away from the meal’s satisfaction.

Rules for Discussion 2 - RTI and EBP Each student is to make a minimum of 2 substantive posts and 2 replies. I may not be able to respond to each and every post, but I will group my responses to make sure to address the topics presented. Discussions cannot be made up or substituted with another assignment. To give your classmates the opportunity to respond to your post, please do not wait until the last hour to post it. This assignment will use the Assignment Rubric displayed earlier in the course. Your original posts and responses are to be reflective of the current literature, clearly state your position and be brief but thorough. Your responses should also be respectful of the person whose post you are responding to. In this discussion, you will present two effective RTI and/or EBP strategies. You can do 2 of EBP or RTI or 2 of either one of the topics. Your discussion should reflect best practices as found in the literature and not a personal preference. Your posts do not have to be long but complete enough that others can understand the intervention or strategy and how it is used. Cite the literature you reviewed supporting your position. reply to this student Response to Intervention (RTI) is a framework designed to help teachers recognize student progress. It consists of two main categories: screening and prevention, RTI aimed at identifying students at risk of poor learning outcomes. The first step in this process is screening, which is a systematic approach to identify students who may be at risk of poor academic performance in various areas, such as academic and behavioral. One strategy is to utilize the Academic Screening Tools, this screening tool is an evidence-based tools, for identifying students at risk of poor academic performance, particularly those needing intensive intervention (NCII, n.d.). This Screening chart provide the school with abundant of information such as classification accuracy, reliability, and validity, and provides insights into sample representativeness, bias analysis, and usability features. The second component of the RTI framework is prevention, which utilizes a multi-tiered system of interventions: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. At each level, student progress is closely monitored and assessed.A crucial aspect of preventing poor learning outcomes is progress monitoring. Progress monitoring tools assess students’ performance over time, tracking their rates of improvement and responsiveness to instruction while evaluating the effectiveness of teaching methods (NCII, 2021). Set measurable goals, goals that can be observed and data can be collected from them systematically. These goals must be based on student’s academic development and be useful for instructional planning. Schools can use this data to decide whether to intensify interventions, such as extending instructional time or adjusting learning preferences. reply to this student In Response to Intervention (RTI), educators utilize a three-tiered model as early intervention for students who show signs of struggling in the curriculum before receiving transfers for assessment in the qualification of these students for special education services. To briefly provide an overview, the RTI three-tiered model consists of tier one, general education classroom curriculum, tier two, supplemental instruction, and tier three, intensive instruction (Hoover & Love, 2011). Within tier two, supplemental instruction, one strategy for implementing this additional instruction includes the problem-solving approach. The problem-solving approach includes a group of professionals related to the student who develop educational decisions based on the performance of the student. The problem-solving model incorporates a systematic approach that identifies interventions for the student that are evidence-based, periodically collects data to assess the status of the intervention and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the student (Canter, 2004). The problem-solving approach shows potential to improve the performances of students that reside in the second tier (Canter, 2004). However, more research is needed to adequately review the effectiveness of the problem-solving approach (Carney & Steifel, 2008). When looking at evidence-based practices (EBP), there exists a multitude of strategies within EBP that have been shown to be effective for providing positive outcomes for students through research. One such example of a strategy of EBP is task analysis. In task analysis, big tasks, like brushing teeth, are broken down into smaller steps that make it easier for the student to complete (Snodgrass et al., 2017). This helps teach the student how to complete the skill in its entirety by breaking down the steps to complete it. This becomes especially useful when providing students additional support in learning how to complete bigger skills like washing hands, zipping up a jacket, or folding laundry (Snodgrass et al., 2017). With utilizing task analyses, professionals can see what steps a student needs to work on to complete the task independently (Snodgrass et al., 2017). Therefore, task analyses play an important role in helping students become independent. Both task analyses and the problem solving approach attempt to improve student progress and performance under the principles of RTI and EBP.

Assignment #2 - The Prequel Before you begin the assignment, please review the tips provided in the announcement for Assignment 1. Also, apply the feedback you received in your paper for Assignment 1 to Assignment 2. To write a strong paper for Assignment 2, there are some skills you must have. Review the information contained in the file named EEX6051 APA Formatting and Other Assignment Resources. You are responsible for the information contained in the instructional videos. About Literature Reviews It is mandatory you view the video the library created especially for this assignment. It is found in the file EEX6051 APA Formatting and Other Assignment Resources. You will not be able to write an acceptable literature review without this information. You will probably need to narrow your effective strategies from Assignment 1. For example, you cannot do an effective literature review on Positive Reinforcement. Search for Positive Reinforcement in Library One Search and you get millions of hits. It would take a lifetime to review that many articles! The instructional video will show you how to effectively narrow your topic. Sample Literature Reviews - Literature Review: Conducting & Writing - LibGuides at University of West Florida Libraries (uwf.edu)Links to an external site. Above is another link to a resource on writing a literature review. The examples are for much longer papers. The first example is 15 pages long. Your literature review will not be this exhaustive as you will have a title page, approximately 5 pages of text, and a reference page. You are looking at practices that are already acknowledged as evidence-based. Choose studies with the largest numbers of participants as they will be the strongest. A meta-analysis reviewing 25 studies with 300 participants is a much stronger piece of research than 10 studies with a single case design. Example of an Acceptable Literature Review Review of the Literature Bellini and Akullian (2007) conducted a meta-analysis of twenty-three single-subject design studies to evaluate the effectiveness of video self-monitoring and video modeling on behavioral functioning, social communication skills, and functional skills in children with autism ages 3 to 21. They found that video modeling and video self-monitoring were effective in all areas, maintained over time, and generalized across settings and people. Qi et al. (2018) conducted a synthesized systematic review of 18 single-case research studies utilizing the What Works Clearinghouse SCRD standards. Their analysis included 53 children between the ages of 3 and 11. They found that the 18 studies met WWC design standards (with and without reservations) exceeding the minimum of 5 and demonstrated strong and moderate causal effects between video modeling and improved social communication skills. Wright, Knight, and Barton (2020) conducted a systematic literature review utilizing the Council for Exceptional Children Standards for Evidence-Based Practices in Special Education to code studies to determine if Video modeling was an evidence-based practice for teaching STEM to students with autism. Reviewing 10 studies, which included 36 participants with autism and/or intellectual disabilities, 75% of whom were male with limited information on ethnicity, they found that video modeling met evidence-based criteria for math but not other STEM components (science, technology, and engineering). Example of a Statement Determining EBP The What Works Clearinghouse (2023) identifies CW-FIT as an evidence-based intervention for students in grades pre-kindergarten to 10th grade. It met the evaluation criteria for strong causal evidence of increased student outcomes across multiple settings and a unique range of individuals in 8 of the 19 studies reviewed. Assignment #2 Directions In Assignment One, you identified effective classroom practices and interventions. For this assignment you can use the effective practices from Assignment 1, but your analysis of the professional literature needs to be expanded and more thorough than in Assignment 1. In addition, examine the impediments to teacher use of the most effective interventions. Next, identify the three most ineffective practices/interventions used in academic, therapeutic, or home settings. Provide multiple professional references and clear statements about why these interventions are ineffective or inappropriate. Be sure to clearly explain why/how you selected the three most ineffective strategies. Be concise and to the point. Examine why teachers still use these ineffective strategies. Explore if the ineffective strategies are ineffective because of poor implementation or a flawed theoretical foundation. Remember – Use professional references and clear statements about why these interventions or practices are ineffective or inappropriate - not your opinion. You should use interventions that have been used within the last 20 years. No need to discuss trepanning (You'll have to look that up.) Have some fun with this assignment. The end product will be a paper from 5-10 pages long (plus the Title and Reference page) examining 3 effective and 3 ineffective interventions or practices. These interventions do not need to be listed in any order - such as best to worst or good to the best. You must receive a score of at least 80% in order to pass the class. If you receive a score of less than 80%, you will have to work with the instructor to complete a remedial program for this assignment. You cannot receive a score of 80% if any part of the assignment is missing. Do not use direct quotes. Paraphrase in your own words. Do not write in first person. Use APA style. Submit your paper as a word document. Use these headings in your paper (Headings must be in APA format) Introduction (State the purpose of the paper. List your 3 effective and 3 ineffective strategies.) Effective strategies Strategy One (Name and describe how the strategy works.) Literature review- Examination of Professional Literature- Discuss how the strategy has been shown to be effective Impediments to their use (Repeat headings for strategies 2 and 3.) Ineffective strategies Strategy One (Name and describe how the strategy works.) Literature Review- Examination of Professional Literature (Why are they ineffective? Poor practice or flawed theory? Why did teachers use them? Are they still used? (Repeat headings for strategies 2 and 3.) Conclusion Checklist 1. Did you use the headings provided? Are they in APA format? Check them off to be sure. Introduction Effective Strategy 1 Literature Review Impediments to Use Effective Strategy 2 Literature Review Impediments to Use Effective Strategy 3 Literature Review Impediments to Use Ineffective Strategy 1 Literature Review Why was it used? Is it still used? Ineffective Strategy 2 Literature Review Why was it used? Is it still used? Ineffective Strategy 3 Literature Review Why was it used? Is it still used? Conclusion 2. Compare the quality of your Literature Reviews to the sample provided. Did you use multiple articles including meta-analyses? Remember, single case designs or designs with a low number of participants are not powerful enough to prove a strategy is effective. 3. Carefully proofread your paper. It is a good idea to have someone else read it as you are so familiar with what you want to say that you may not catch errors. 4. Open your paper in the Home Screen. Find the “Editor” tool. Check your paper for errors in all the categories displayed in the Editor feature. Note: After I return your paper with my comments, I will then open a new dropbox (INST report) and you will then place the paper in this dropbox. Do not make the suggested changes. Submit it as I returned it to you.
