Part 1: First I would love to hear about your future endeavors and so please take this opportunity to reflect on your progress in accomplishing your educational goals as you move forward in your academic career. Part 2: More than half the world's population now lives in cities around the globe and that number is expected to rise to 2/3 by 2050. When thinking about sustainable development, that means cities will be ground zero for innovation and achievement. This week you studied what sustainable development means and some great examples of those leading the way. Here let's discuss how your city is doing! Using the following resources (and those from the course) look up your city to see where they place. Then check out the Sustainable Cities Review and pick out a few ideas that you think would work well where you are and why you believe it would be successful in your area. United States Sustainable Development Report 2021 (find your state here by clicking on state profiles at the top) - https://us-states.sdgindex.org/ Then find your city in the 2019 report (if yours is not listed, find the closest one or one you are interested in) - https://www.sustainabledevelopment.report/reports/2019-us-cities-sustainable-development-report/ Princeton, Sustainable Cities Review (examples of what others are doing - https://psci.princeton.edu/tips/2020/6/16/sustainable-cities Answer the following questions: How is your state doing overall? Summarize their standing. Where does your city fall on the sustainable development report list? (A screenshot is great but make sure to embed it in the post rather than attached and discuss your findings too). Highlight some of the SDG dashboards and trends that your city is "doing well" and "not so well". What are a couple of practical ways the city could become more sustainable?

To prepare for this assignment, Review Chapter 3: Managing Our Population and Consumption. Review Chapter 4: Sustaining Our Agricultural Resources. Ensure you have participated in all discussions and completed all other assignments and activities for the week. Complete the following: Discuss each of your five specific environmental footprint reduction actions or habits and give an update on what progress was made between Week 1 and the end of Week 2 for each item. If you experienced challenges along the way, identify them and map out a plan to move closer toward that original goal, if possible. If, after some time, an action does not seem like it will work, then you can choose a new action to replace it. Explain your learning from the 2nd week of class. What are three new concepts or terms that you learned about? How has your outlook on soil, agriculture, and food systems changed because of this new knowledge? What topics might you be interested in learning more about in the future? Look ahead to Week 3, where we will be examining issues related to water including water pollution, water availability, runoff, conserving water, and storm water management. Discuss some ways that these new topics might intersect with what you learned this week about soil and agriculture. How do the subjects of agriculture and water management impact each other? To prepare for your assignment, Try to find information as close to where you live as possible. If you cannot find information within a 50-mile radius of where you live, then try searching the closest large city, or within your county. Identify the predominant soil type(s) in your area. You can reference the ecoregion information from the Week 1 lab follow-up assignment. Identify the weather and climate conditions of your area. Research what types of agriculture, if any, are currently being practiced in your area. Now, you are ready to draft a paper about soil and sustainable agriculture where you live, and your own plan for a 500-acre sustainable food production operation. In your essay, Describe the general area where you live (local community, county, etc.) by addressing the following: What are the characteristics of the soil? What is the composition (sand, silt, clay)? How well does it retain water? How fertile is the soil generally? What are the seasons like? How much precipitation (rain and snow) do you get annually, and how is it distributed throughout the year? Discuss agricultural production in your community: What crops are being grown? What production methods are being used? Is irrigation necessary? Are there any greenhouses or other indoor food production operations in your area? Are there any organic or other sustainable agriculture operations within 50 or 100 miles of your location? Create a plan, based on the conditions in your area, for a sustainable food production operation that addresses the following questions: How will you divide up the 500 acres between at least four different sustainable food production methods? Why is each method suitable to your local area and conditions? Which foods will you produce and what methods will you utilize for each one? You should conduct research on sustainable food production systems, and you can also use information from the Week 2 Properties of Soil and Sustainable Agriculture Laboratory.
