Apply Kant's moral philosophy to judge the MAIN action of the movie: Gone Baby G ...

Apply Kant's moral philosophy to judge the MAIN action of the movie: Gone Baby Gone and Sleepers. Please make sure the movie you picked displays a strong moral dilemma. Identify the moral dilemma at the beginning of your paper. You must apply Kant's 3 premises for 50 points and Michael Sandel's 3 contrasts . The paper must have at least 500 words and be in MLA or APA format. Kant's Three Premises Explained In the case of " Gone Baby Gone" the philosophical process you will follow in this paper should sound as something like this: According to Kant’s first premise Patrick behaved moral because he returned the victim he was hired to find and without condition this is the "right" conduct for any detective in cases of kidnapping (the "First Maxim"). Here Kant speaks of doing the right prior to good. 2. On Kant’s second premise Patrick acted moral because he respected the dignity of Amanda and he treated her as an end in herself and not as means to an end like everyone else was doing in the film (the "Second Maxim"). Here Kant speaks of humans as special creatures and ends in themselves. Humans are ends, not means to an end. Los seres humanos son un fin, no un medio para un fin. 3. The conclusion is that a detective act morally when he reports a kidnapping to the police and this behavior should establish a universal law governing all detectives in cases of kidnapping (the "Third Maxim"). Here Kant asks us to test the universality of our action. Will it be OK if everyone does what I am about to do? Please let me know if you have further questions. Kant’s Categorical Imperative Nature of the concept The concept of the categorical imperative is a syllogism 1.The first premise is that a person acts morally if his or her conduct would, without condition, be the "right" conduct for any person in similar circumstances (the "First Maxim"). 2.The second premise is that conduct is "right" if it treats others as ends in themselves and not as means to an end (the "Second Maxim"). 3.The conclusion is that a person acts morally when he or she acts as if his or her conduct was establishing a universal law governing others in similar circumstances (the "Third Maxim").

DISCUSSION 3 (JOIN) Module 3: Respond to one reading source (200 words minimum) and then to at least two other student posts (15 points/5 pts/5 pts). At least 300 words total are expected (add word count). As before, I've offered some starting throughts. NOTE: the original materials/links for Discussion Boards are not always posted here but are always in the module, so when that's the case, go there to read them. Write directly in the typing field. Always title your post with the name of the program/article, so people know at a glance your focus (i.e., "Cyrus Cylinder," "Archaeologist Strikes Gold," etc.). I might award a point for clever and relevant links, but please – no tired memes or tweets, and absolutely nothing cruel or off-color. Option #1: Cyrus Cylinder - How a Persian monarch inspired Jefferson After reading, you should be able to answer at least one of these questions: What two key historical figures are discussed in the article, and what’s their connection How and why is the Cyrus Cylinder important to the kinds of freedom enjoyed in liberal Western-style democracies such as Britain and the United States? What are its specific connections to American history, and given contemporary politics (see recent US-Iran news stories, for example), why is it fitting – and ironic – that it should have toured the United States? Option #2: Archaeologists strike gold in quest to find Queen of Sheba's wealth After reading the article page, you should be able to answer at least three of these questions: How was the lost mine rediscovered, and by whom? What is the image of the queen in popular culture, and what is the source? Why was the queen’s wealth important to that connection? What is an example of such influence in art?  What was the relationship between Sheba and ancient Israel?

I have attached the instructions below as well as the needed textbook and transcript. (IN AREAS IF YOU USE SOMETHING FROM THE TRANSCRIPT PLEASE LET ME KNOW WITH A (INSERT TRANSCRIPT CITATION IN YELLOW HIGHLIGHT AND I WILL ADD THE REFERENCE TO THAT) INSTRUCTIONS: In the scenario assignments, you are asked to reflect on responses to the presented scenario. It should not just be writing down your first reaction or what you already know. Reflection involves critical thinking, which means rethinking your existing knowledge and previously held opinions in light of what we have learned about theories of ethics, logic, and reasoning. You will need to question your current knowledge and beliefs. Discuss the main points of the debate, what stance you take, support that stance, and discuss the opposing argument. Also, discuss an ethical theory that would apply to defend your view. To complete each scenario assignment: 1. Complete the entire scenario. 2. Fill out the template attached below, ask your professor for details on submission. 3. Compose the last question on the template reflection in a Word document and be sure to address, at a minimum, the following questions: Why do you feel the way you do about the issue presented? Of the four responses offered in the scenario, which do you think is the most ethical and why? Which ethical theory would you use to support your stance? Why does this theory work 4. Support your conclusions with evidence and specific examples from the textbook, including a minimum of one theory of ethics to defend your stance. 5. Your reflection must be 1-2 pages in length and follow APA formatting and citation guidelines as appropriate, making sure to cite at least two sources. TEMPLATE Week 9 Scenario and Reflection Essay Write your introduction. Tell us what the paper is about. Provide a solid paragraph. If you use any sources here, be sure to cite them. The correct citations for the resources I have provided below are: (Pence, 2021) or (Pence, 2021, p. #) if you are quoting for the textbook. The second paragraph should cover how you feel about the topic and why. Consider the following questions. Did you have any views on the issue prior to viewing the scenario? If so, what were they? Did they change over the course of listening to the arguments? If so, how? The third paragraph should cover which of the four responses offered in the scenario, which do you think is the most ethical and why. This is where you need to be sure to support your conclusions with evidence and specific examples from the textbook, including a minimum of one theory of ethics (Care Ethics, Virtue Ethics, Kantian Ethics, Social Contract Ethics [Hobbes, Rousseau or Rawls version of the Social Contract], Act Utilitarianism, or Rule Utilitarianism [not just utilitarianism – this is wrong] to defend your stance. Refer back to the material covered in Week 1.

“I am not sorry that we note the barbarous horror of such acts, but I am very sorry that while judging their faults rightly we are so blind to our own.  I think that there is more barbarity in eating a man alive than in eating him dead, in lacerating by rack and torture a body still full of feeling, in having him bitten and mangled by dogs and pigs (as we have not only read about but have seen in recent memory, not among enemies in antiquity but among neighbors and fellow citizens and, what is worse, on the pretext of piety and of religion) than in roasting him and eating him after his death.”  (“Of Cannibals”, p. 93) The exegesis papers are your attempt to explain and interpret a difficult or striking passage from a text we are studying.  Please follow the guidelines below for your papers. Papers are to be submitted as a physical copy no more than one week after we have discussed the text in class. The passage you are writing about should be at the beginning of your response. Quote the passage as a single-spaced block quotation without quotation marks.  The author, text, and page or section number of the passage should be cited in parentheses at the end of the passage.  See the example below: The causality of reason in the intelligible character does not arise or start working at a certain time in producing an effect.  For then it would itself be subject to the natural law of appearance, to the extent that this law determines causal series in time, and its causality would then be nature and not freedom.  Thus we could say that if reason can have causality in regard to appearances, then it is a faculty through which the sensible condition of an empirical series of effects first begins.  For the condition that lies in reason is not sensible and does not itself begin.  Accordingly, there takes place here what we did not find in any empirical series: that the condition of a successive series could itself be empirically unconditioned.

Part I: Q&A Discussion Forum: You will be asked to come up with two original questions based on the work of two different authors in each week’s required readings. Think about what stood out to you in the works in question—what ideas, theories, or approaches did you find to be interesting, engaging, or perhaps intriguing or challenging? (See each Discussion Forum for the specific authors or works you may select from in forming your questions.) Your task is then to do your best to answer each of your own questions as incisively and thoroughly as possible within a word-count range of around 350-500 words maximum (posts with fewer than 250 words will not receive any credit). The word count includes your question but not any citations. You must cite at least one source, which will be the particular essay or article from the required readings you are addressing. You are welcome to bring in as many others sources as you may need, but this is optional. Just be sure to cite any source from which you take ideas, arguments, or passages of language within the body of your response (next to the quoted or paraphrased passages), including the full source information at the end of your response (you need not do a separate works cited or reference page for this assignment). Your score for this part of the assignment will be based on the relevance, sophistication, and originality of your questions as well as the insight,  understanding, and incisiveness expressed in your answers. This assignment will be due at the end of day on each Friday of the course. In these essay-style responses to your own questions, you should express a point of view and support your view with good reasons, evidence, examples, expert opinion, etc. High marks will not be achieved by simply reporting back information from the text or other sources. Philosophical thinking and writing involves more than presenting information; beyond doing this, you must also critically assess the issue in question—this involves original thinking and analysis. Moreover, you should attempt to come to some final position in response to the question and include evaluation of others’ positions or views on the issues involved in the question. Work for originality and development of critical analyses and evaluations.  1) Part I: Each one of your two Q&A Discussion threads should be formatted as follows (remember...these are two separate threads): First thread: My first question is: My answer to this question is: Second thread: My second question is: My answer to this question is:  Part 2) After completing this week’s assigned chapters of Russell’s The Problems of Philosophy as well as the other required readings for this week, first, summarize what you learned from reading Russell this week. Then, your main goal in this assignment beyond the summary is to tie together any theories, themes, concepts, important ideas, arguments, important observations, etc. you discover in Russell’s work and the particular philosophical views and the general content covered in the other readings. For example, in Week Four, you will be summarizing Chapters XIII-XV in The Problems of Philosophy, and then you will look for how what he says there links up with, adds to, or even conflicts with the philosophical views and ideas of James, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche. Chapter XV will likely be the focus of the comparative part of your commentary. This brief, informal essay should be in the 400-500-word range. You may submit your “Russell Round Up” as a file attachment or simply write it directly into the text editor (but best practice is always to save your work in a file so you don’t risk losing it if your computer shuts down). Please pay careful attention to grammar, spelling, word use, and writing style; this means you need to proofread your work before submitting it. This assignment is worth 5 points (weighted at 4%). It is due at the end of day on each Saturday of the course.
