WEEK 7 READINGS: Caring Work Stacey, The Caring Self: The Work Experiences of Home Care Aides(selection) Glenn, Evelyn Nakano. Forced to care: Coercion and caregiving in America. Harvard University Press, 2010. Ch.6 & Ch.7 (both are attached) Assignment part 1: Write a 400–500-word commentary on ONE of this week's readings: Guidelines: The goal of the long commentary is to allow you to distill the main arguments of the texts and engage them analytically. Rather than simply summarize the reading or raise a lot of questions, you should develop your own analytical points. Think about the contributions as well as the limitations of the texts you’re responding to—that is, spend as much time engaging in a productive way with the reading as critiquing it. Some possible questions to ask yourself as you read that you might respond to in the commentary: What are the pros and cons of the theoretical and methodological choices or assumptions the author has made? What seems innovative or surprising about the author’s analysis? How does this author’s work relate to other texts we have read, either in the week you’re writing about or across the semester? You may also discuss current events that seem thematically connected to the readings Assignment part 2: Write a short commentary on THE OTHER READING FROM THIS WEEK (whichever text you did not choose for part 1). This reading response should raise questions for discussion with a word count around 100 words. Writing style should be a casual response and reaction to the readings and include a few questions.

Purpose This purpose of this assignment is to have you think about your specifi ...

Purpose This purpose of this assignment is to have you think about your specific Sociology Skills and how they can be used to improve your applications for employment/graduate school. Having the ability to speak strongly of your skillsets will make you a more competitive applicant. Instructions There are many examples out there for writing a Career Statement (you can google this). However, for this assignment I would like you to explain your work and life experiences, as well a few of your passions, as they relate to the workforce you plan to enter, your work ethic, your long-term goals in the specific career field, and why you are someone they should call for an interview. A few things to keep in mind: Keep it short, no more than 2 pages. This is a firm requirement. Statements longer than two pages will not be read by others. Be honest, but not too honest. It's okay to reveal that you have "experienced some hardships" in life, but you might not want to reveal items that might be too personally controversial (i.e. addictions, arrests, other illegal activities, etc.). I've had former students reveal challenges and show how they overcame those challenges. This makes you human! If you have questions about what to say or not to say, feel free to email me and ask. You want them to remember you. They need a reason to set your statement in the "Contender" pile. This can be from the style of your writing (creative, humor, descriptive) or from the content - but find at least one way to have something that makes a reader say "hmmm, this is interesting." It might not guarantee you the job, but remember - you are trying to get a face-to-face interview first! ALWAYS use words that are in the job advertisement. Use the same words that the employer is using to advertise. Employers will search your documents to see how many "matches" it has to the job advertisement. For this assignment, try to use words you have seen in the job ads that we have shown you in class. You should have one paragraph devoted to your Sociology Skills. This should be based on each of your own unique education and training, but generally should be strengths that you bring to the job that other applications might not be describing. For each of you, it can begin like this.... "My education at UNLV in the Sociology Department gave me important skills that translate well to this career (or job). First, I ....... Second, I..... And third, I ......... ***This where you insert the skillsets from the ASA website shown in class and discussed in class. I should see very clear skill language here. Grading Criteria It should be typed, 12-point font, and no more than 2 pages. This assignment is worth 100 points. Grading will be based on how well you address each of my concerns above and how well you integrate the course materials into your career statements.

Prior to implementing a program evaluation, it is essential to review current scholarly literature to ensure that your approach to addressing your problem statement is sound and supported by research. You may need to alter your methodology or approach following the literature review. By successfully completing this assignment, you demonstrate your proficiency in the following competency and specialized behaviors: Competency 4: Engage in practice-informed research and research-informed practice. C4.SP.A: Apply leadership skills, ethical use of technology and research findings to inform and improve practice, policy, and programs in the specialization of advanced generalist practice settings. Related Assignment Criteria: 4. Create a selective summary of empirical literature. 2. Assess the guiding practice theory base connected to the described problem. 1. Analyze the problem presented in the case study. C4.SP.B: Analyze and respond to ethical, culturally informed, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive strategies in the specialization of advanced generalist social work practice that address inherent biases for use in quantitative and qualitative research methods. Related Assignment Criteria: 3: Describe the program evaluation theory base connected to the proposed methodology. 5: Develop a problem statement and guiding research question for the program evaluation. Assignment Description Your literature review creates a theoretical foundation for your evaluation and guides the development of the research question. As you research, be sure to consider multiple perspectives and theories, rather than simply viewing your program evaluation through one lens. This ensures that you find the most reliable and accurate methodologies and theories to support your program evaluation. Prior to beginning your literature review, you will conduct a review of scholarly and peer-reviewed research from a variety of sources.Assignment Instructions Utilize at least five empirical articles published within the last 10 years in peer-reviewed journals. These articles should be program evaluations dealing with interventions for teen parents. (See the Teen Parenting Case Study [PDF].) Organize the information into subheadings. The order of your literature review follows: Introduction: Orient the reader to the case study topic—teen parenting programs—and tell the reader what to expect in this section by identifying the major subsections that follow in your thesis statement. Nature of the problem: Address the prevalence of teen parenting, changes over time, and consequences of teen parenting. Causes of the problem: Apply theoretical and social work knowledge to this issue and explain some of the risks associated with teen parenting (for example, mental health outcomes for the parent and abusive parenting practices). The causes you describe here should be directly related to the proposed interventions. Interventions: This section should be the most substantive part of this literature review. Review interventions that have been utilized to serve teen parents. Note that this is a literature review, not an annotated bibliography, so you should be integrating your discussion of various studies. Include a paragraph about what is not known about solving the problem and current gaps in knowledge. Assess the guiding practice theory connected to the problem. Also, describe the program evaluation theory connected to the proposed methodology. Summary: This section should point out the major areas of knowledge that have yet to be developed regarding this topic and identify the unique contributions your study makes to this need; point out the importance of learning the new information your study will offer. Problem Statement and Guiding Research Questions What is the problem this program evaluation is trying to address? Include your research questions. Since this is a program evaluation, you should have an independent variable and dependent variable clearly stated in your questions Additional Requirements Your assignment should meet the following requirements: Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message. APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and formatting standards. Cited resources: A minimum of five scholarly sources. All literature cited should be within 10 years of publication. Length of paper: 6–7 double-spaced pages. Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point. Instructions: Review the textbook chapter on Social Theories and then answer the questions below. Remember, the word 'theory' is synonymous (the same as) with the word 'perspective' or 'paradigm'. They all mean the same thing. For example, conflict theory = conflict perspective = conflict paradigm. In paragraph form, please discuss each of the major sociological perspectives/paradigms. First, define each theory in your own words. Then, provide an original example of how you can apply each perspective to some part of society. Functionalist Perspective Conflict Perspective Interactionist Perspective NOTE: You must know the three major sociological theories thoroughly. You will writing about a specific section in a research paper. You will not be writing the entire paper, only 3 pages that will be apart of the paper. I will provide more specific information to write about on a separate document. This way you will know what to write about but you can also improvise on some of the information as long as it lines up with the research project. Research Methods Prompt (3 pages): RESEARCH METHODS (about 3 pages): The methods section documents how you studied your topic. In it, you should describe the qualitative data collection methods you used. You also will describe the techniques you used to code and analyze your data (but save the description of your actual findings for the Results section!). Why did you choose the site you chose? Why did you choose the respondents you chose? Why did you choose the questions you chose? How did you narrow your focus to the concepts you explored? What challenges were presented? Were there any fortuitous developments (e.g. identifying “key” respondents, gaining access to challenging sites)? How did you arrive at your most salient codes? After reading your methods section (and viewing the associated attachments, such as your interview guide), another researcher should have enough information to replicate your study. You can reference relevant attachments (e.g. interview guides) in the text, but attach these items as appendices at the back of the paper. For some of these questions you can just create your own answers as long as it ties in to the overall topic and research.
