Goals: You will work to create an electronic poster or infographic on ONE of the following topics. Generally, posters/infographics rely heavily on the use of pictures, figures, and succinct text to convey information in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-understand. You should create a poster that succinctly communicates information addressing all points of your chosen prompt.  Submit your posters as a PDF to this assignment on TCU Online.  Software: You can use whatever makes you most comfortable, as long as the assignment is ultimately submitted as a PDF. You can use PowerPoint, Word, or an online infographic generator such as Piktochart.  References: You should use at least three quality references (.edu's and .govs will be particularly helpful in this assignment). All information on your poster/infographic should be in your own words, not copied directly from your sources. On your poster/infographic, you should include an in-text citation indicating where specific information came from. Additionally, you should include a list of all references somewhere on your poster (I would recommend making it relatively inconspicuous somewhere near the bottom. If you would like to see an example, the example infographic on sleep does a nice job of doing this.  Case Study Topics 1: "Only you can prevent forest fires." - Smokey Bear. (Group 1) Describe the major flaw in this statement and give examples of how this policy has likely led to more frequent and extreme forest fires.  Give specific examples of how naturally occurring fires affect a healthy forest ecosystem.

You work for a pharmaceutical company where you are assigned the task of creating new drug therapies to treat thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism (high levels of T3 and T4) and hypothyroidism (low levels of T3 and T4). Your team has designed a few drugs, and your job is to identify which drug(s) would be successful in treating thyroid disorders based on your knowledge of thyroid hormone synthesis. Below is the list of drugs your team designed. (All of these are hypothetical drugs.) Peroxidine inhibits thyroid peroxidase from functioning. Cimigine inhibits potassium/iodine cotransporter. Iodimine inhibits iodinase from functioning. Aldosine inhibits production of angiotensinogen from the liver. Aldoramine inhibits sodium/iodine cotransporter. Thyromine stimulates thyroglobulin production. For this week's discussion: Describe in detail the steps involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). Explain the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in relation to thyroid hormone release. Which hypothetical drugs would treat thyroid disease (hyper and hypothyroid) and explain the reasoning behind it.

Questions for group discussion: Tigers and lions inhabit different areas and different habitats. Tigers live in forested areas in South East Asia while Lions inhabit open savannas in Africa and South West Asia. Lions and tigers never mate in the wild because they are geographically and ecologically isolated. However, in the zoo, they can mate and produce viable offspring. A) Would you classify tigers and lions as the same species using the biological species concept? Yes/No and explain what was the main factor in your decision. B) Would you classify tigers and lions as the same species using the ecological species concept? Yes/No and explain what was the main factor in your decision. Watch this interactive video to answer questions 2 & 3: According to the example of lizard speciation in the Caribbean (watch the video above). A) Identify cases of sympatric speciation. B) List and explain the evolutionary forces that resulted in this type of speciation (Natural selection, gene flow (migration), genetic drift, non-random mating, mutation). Base your answer on the video above. According to the example of lizard speciation in the Caribbean (watch the video above). A) Identify cases of allopatric speciation. B) List and explain the evolutionary forces that resulted in this type of speciation (Natural selection, gene flow (migration), genetic drift, non-random mating, mutation). C) Identify cases of convergent evolution and explain your choice. Base your answer on the video above. Use this phylogeny for question 4: This phylogeny shows the relationships of all vertebrates. A) Where is the most recent common ancestor between mammals and reptiles? Explain your choice B) Both, birds and mammals have the ability to regulate body temperature using metabolism. This is called endothermy. Do you think endothermy is a homologous or analogous trait of birds and mammals? Explain your choice. C) Amphibians, reptiles and mammals are considered tetrapods because they all have four legs or descend from ancestors with four legs. Where do you think the trait for four legs first appeared? Explain. D) Can you use this phylogeny to argue that one group is more evolved than another? explain. Explain how DNA replication, mitosis and meiosis are involved in the appearance and transmission of heritable mutations. Explain how gene regulation and developmental genes are involved in the evolution of species.

Briefly contrast the traditional methods used to create vaccines with more recently used biotechnology techniques, including the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. Explain how the mRNA vaccines work based on your knowledge of the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology. What are some of the diseases that infants and children in the US are routinely vaccinated against? How have vaccinations impacted the frequency of these diseases over the past 100 years? Why are some people worried about giving their children vaccines? Why do some people believe that the MMR vaccine can cause autism? Is there scientific evidence to support these concerns? Conclude with advice to your friend in regard to getting the recommended vaccines based on what you learned from reliable information sources.                                                 Requirements: Locate 3 reliable Information sources. Write 2-3 sentences for each information source explaining why you believe these sources are reliable.

What is your microbiome? Microbes commonly form symbiotic relationship with multicellular organisms such as the gut microbiome Links to an external site. of animals (bacteria colonizing our intestines) or the mycorrhiza Links to an external site. (mycorrhizome) of plant roots (fungi colonizing the roots of vascular plants). Find information about some of these microbial communities for humans, animals or plants. Explore the benefits of these microbial colonies for the host organism. You can discuss the human microbiome, or the plant mycorrhizal associations, or a combination thereof. Are there similarities in the benefits for both animals and plants? Is there a 'logic' to why some microbiomes are bacterial while mycorrhiza are dominantly fungi? Individually, pick one topic, as a class we should get a discussion of the larger spectrum of these microbiomes.  please respond to the following top discussion interact with the bottom response to a classmates discussion for the topic discussion.  I found it interesting that some microbes are bacterial while mycorrhiza are dominantly fungi. This brought to my attention how there can be a variety of different type of species and ones that are similar to one another. That can also have their key differences that make that distinct and categorize them into different sections. This is what makes them identifiable for having different microbial boundaries. Fungi is most recognizable for having spores and the ability to keep growing. It is identifiable that human microbiome is different with special physical features as to compared to plant mycorrhizal. They have different structures and distinct sequences. I think that there is logic to the idea that different microbes have different formations and physical characteristics to them. The fungi microbials are found to have some relation to similarity with the microbials of bacteria. But they do have well understood differences.
