Mid-term reflection. Think of a time when you engaged with a virtual environment, virtual reality, or augmented reality.  If you never have, then use whatever your most immersive (digital) experience has been.  Reflect upon your experience and your engagement level:    Were there other characters or live people that you were interacting with on a strictly virtual level?  If so, what are your relationships with them?  Did you have an emotional attachment or feelings about them? •    Did you have an avatar? If so how did you create it? What led you to select that avatar? •    Did you feel a sense of presence or immersion? If so, what impact did that have on your experience? •    What have you learned this semester that makes you think about your virtual interactions differently? •    What kind of virtual experience would you like to have in the future?

Alexy (2019a) defines intimacy panics as “intimacy practices supposedly causing harm to the social order” (p. 15). Every society legitimizes certain relationships and relational conduct while opposing others. Intimate practices that were once viewed as deviant (e.g., same-sex or interracial marriage in the U.S.) may later become socially acceptable. Those that are viewed as completely normal in one society may cause public concern in another culture (e.g., later-life divorce in Japan). There are still others that have caused concerns in many countries (e.g., aging and elderly support). For this assignment, you will identify an example of an intimacy panic that was not covered in class and analyze it from a comparative/cross-cultural perspective. Topic: The topic that you investigate can be either contemporary or historical, and it can be either culturally specific or transnational. However, you need to have enough evidence to show that the phenomenon you are analyzing caused public concerns, even a moral crisis, in a society (or many societies). News reports, scholarly articles and books, historical documents, documentaries and films, and social media discussions may all serve as evidence to indicate public attention and anxiety. In other words, you should not present something as an intimacy panic just because it has made you uncomfortable. An easy way to start searching for an example is to look at intimacy “crises” that have been covered in media. Good international news sources include BBC (Crossing Continents, Documentaries, Global News), The Guardian, Der Spiegel International, Al Jazeera, NPR World, The New York Times World News, etc. You may also want to watch other episodes in Christiane Amanpour: Sex and Love Around the World or other shows or documentaries for inspiration. Alternatively, you may search for domestic examples in U.S. media (or media in your own culture) first and look for parallel cases in other societies. Research: After identifying your example, you will delve deeper into the phenomenon and do some background research about the following questions: What is this phenomenon like? Who are involved in this intimate practice and what is the social, economic, institutional, and cultural background behind this phenomenon? Why has this intimate practice become a social problem? Why do people view it as problematic? What kinds of moral concerns do people have? What and whose social or moral orders are challenged by this intimate conduct? What kinds of values and norms in this society do their objections indicate? What roles do media play in constructing this moral panic? Do media tend to exacerbate the seriousness of the issue or do they provide fair representations? Do media provide competing narratives of the phenomenon? How do people participating in this intimate practice view and understand their own behaviors? How do they respond to public objection and criticism? How do scholars view this phenomenon? Why do they think this issue is important to research and what are their stances on it? How has the society responded to the public panic? Have laws or policies been issued to regulate this kind of relational conduct or assuage public concern? Are there organizations, campaigns, or cultural groups that support this practice and what are their agendas and actions? From a comparative perspective, how common is the phenomenon across the world? Is it culturally specific or a global trend, and why? If this is an international issue, do you see similar patterns in your culture? If this is a domestic issue, do you see similar patterns in other cultures? How would people outside of the culture view this intimate practice and why do you think so? Deliverable: You will write a short, 2-page analysis to present some of your findings. You do not need to answer every single question listed above, but your analysis should be clear, concise, and convincing. You need to adopt a cross-cultural perspective in your analysis, so make sure that you do some research on the last question. A list of sources you used in your research. I’m sure that you will need and use more than two sources, but at the minimum, you must have at least one trustworthy media source and one scholarly source.

Scenario You work for CON-voke, an organization that helps develop and run conventions and conferences on a variety of topics. Your coworker, Nathan, has developed a presentation about time management that will be delivered at the annual CON-voke company meeting. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, he will not be able to attend and present. Using his script and materials, you must make this presentation to a multicultural audience. Directions The presentation will be brief, approximately 10 minutes. Nathan has already created a proposed outline, found some resources on time management, and written a partial script. However, you can see that his script is not the best for a multicultural audience. You will need to go through the presentation and make it ready. Part 1: Annotated Presentation Script and Email: Review the outline, resources, and script. Use the outline and resources as a starting point, but you may make changes and additions as necessary. Your final presentation should describe the relevant topic and provide a good overview for an unfamiliar audience. Once you have reviewed the resources, identify at least five passages in the script that will need to be modified to be more accessible to a global audience. You can use the ‘Comment’ feature in Microsoft Word, highlight the text, or use a different font color to identify these sections within the Partial Presentation Script. You need to finish writing the script and make any necessary changes to the language and content. Then, include an email to Nathan that explains why you made the changes. The script should be approximately 1,000–1,500 words. As you complete the script, make sure the presentation is written for a multicultural audience. Take into consideration ways to structure the presentation to be effective for a variety of cultures and audiences. Use structure, language, and examples that are culturally aware. Use neutral language, and avoid metaphors and examples that may not have broad relevance across cultures. Make sure you consider ways that language choices may impact the perception of the content. After you have written the script, write an email to Nathan explaining the changes you made to tailor the script to a multicultural audience and why they address challenges in presenting to a global audience. Consider answering these questions: What language choices make communicating to a multicultural audience difficult? What are some of the potential topics you should avoid when presenting to a global audience? How do you determine how best to approach a multicultural audience? What are some audience reactions you should consider as you write the script? Diverse audiences have different expectations of presentations. Part 2: Recorded Video Presentation: Record your video presentation for the annual meeting. Your video should capture you presenting your revised script and be approximately ten minutes in length. You may use supporting materials, like visuals, to help improve your presentation. Be sure to consider how a global audience would interpret any images, if you choose to use them. Use communication techniques to address a multicultural audience. Determine the best methods to convey your message to a global audience. Consider the following: Whether your presentation should be written to persuade or ask The types of communication strategies, like storytelling or presenting scientific data, you should use or avoid Make sure your tone, body language, and other nonverbal communications take different cultural outlooks into consideration. Make sure to utilize culturally aware tone, language, and delivery. What to Submit Every project has a deliverable or deliverables, which are the files that must be submitted before your project can be assessed. For this project, you must submit the following: Annotated Presentation Script and Email After reviewing the resources and the partial presentation script provided, identify passages of the script that are inappropriate for a multicultural audience by noting them within the document. Then, using Nathan’s outline, update the Presentation Script as needed to ensure it is complete and is appropriate for a multicultural audience. Submit your updated script, along with an email to Nathan that explains the changes you made within the script to address the multicultural audience. Your completed script should be 1,000–1,500 words. Recorded Presentation Record the delivery of your presentation. Be sure to use appropriate tone and body language to address a global audience. Your video should be approximately 10 minutes in length. Supporting Materials The following resource(s) may help support your work on the project: Citation Help Need help citing your sources? Use the CfA Citation Guide and Citation Maker. Presentation Outline Use this outline to complete your annotated presentation script. Partial Presentation Script Use this partial script to complete your annotated presentation script.
