Choose one of the following questions to answer: 1. Do you believe that the failure of Reconstruction was primarily a failure of leadership? Or, to put it more concretely, that the outcome might have been different had Lincoln lived? Or had chosen a different vice president? Or had Andrew Johnson not been followed by Ulysses S. Grant? 2. Describe how everyday life changed for former slaves after emancipation. How did the agricultural system of labor change in the South? 3. “The persistence of racism, in both the North and the South, lay at the heart of Reconstruction’s failure.” Agree or disagree, and explain why. 4. List three major achievements of the radical governments in the South. Which do you think was the most important and why? 5. Some northerners wished to provide for a distribution of southern lands to former slaves. Describe that plan and the fate it met. Do you think Reconstruction might have had a chance of succeeding without some form of land redistribution? Why or why not? 1.What was the Enlightenment?  How specifically did it influence the American Revolution? 2.What event ensured French support for the Americans?  Why did they wait so long to formally support the Americans? 3. Republicanism was seen early on as an experiment and the Americans were uncertain if it would succeed.  What American event almost ensures the permanency of Republicanism in the future?  Why is it important?

Taken together, the history in chap. 12 and Shafer’s essay “Southernization” provide us much to consider with respect to the Rise of the West, that is, from Europe’s marginal position in the globe in the fifteenth century to its transformation into the center of empires by the late nineteenth. Based on your reading of this history, what do you think are the most relevant factors that made this shift possible before the 1500s? One thing to consider as you write is how powerful, or weak, European civilization had been in comparison with China, India, the Mongols, the Caliphate, among others, in the centuries before 1500. You must contextualize the your analysis by relating it to specific categories (politics, economics, culture, etc.), themes, trends, people, events, transregional connections, parallels, and/or systems that you have learned from the course material up to this point.

American Imperialism IN THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY, THE UNITED STATES SHOWED A ...

American Imperialism IN THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY, THE UNITED STATES SHOWED A HEIGHTENED INTEREST IN ESTABLISHING AN OVERSEAS EMPIRE. THE EXAMPLE OF EUROPEAN NATIONS AND JAPAN, WHICH WERE SEIZING COLONIES IN ASIA AND AFRICA, STIMULATED THIS EXPANSIONISM. AS A RESULT, AMERICA'S TERRITORIAL BOUNDARIES WILL EXTEND BEYOND ITS BORDERS, AND ITS TERRITORY WILL INCLUDE COLONIAL POSSESSIONS. INSTRUCTIONS: In order to prepare you must complete the following readings: REVIEW AND IDENTIFY THE SECTIONS OF CHAPTER 19 THAT ADDRESS THE TOPICS THAT ARE RELEVANT TO THIS ESSAY. Read the linked articles and use at least one of them for your essay to support your discussion: Henry Cabot Lodge De Lôme Letter Platt Amendment 1903 Identify and incorporate at least one additional outside source to support your discussion. In addition to the textbook, you may use any material outside of the textbook that is recommended in the Additional Reading section at the end of each chapter. You are also encouraged to do your own research and identify relevant sources. Please keep in mind that WIKIPEDIA is not an acceptable reference. PREPARE AND SUBMIT: Write a well-organized essay, a minimum of 700 words (but not limited to), including supporting details from the documents/textbook/other sources, in which you analyze the assigned readings and address the following question: Discuss the economic, strategic, and ideological factors that contributed to American interest in overseas expansion in the latter part of the nineteenth century, and how the U. S. achieved this expansion. As part of your analysis and discussion identify the arguments of both critics and supporters of imperialism, evaluating, and explaining who had the strongest arguments. Reminders Use Microsoft WORD to write the essays. The acceptable submission file types are .doc, .docx, and .rtf.  No Pages documents. Prepare the assignment as a Word Document, double-spaced, and using a standard 12-point font. Paragraphs in an essay are not numbered. Any questions that are associated with an assigned reading are there to serve as a guide for your discussion. Your discussion should incorporate all of the information from the documents and or textbook, and outside sources as one essay. Students are required to research and incorporate into their discussions additional sources that relate to the content. Recommendations can be found at the end of the textbook chapter in Additional Reading. All statements must be supported, and all sources must be identified and cited, and included in your reference list. This also applies to the textbook. Failure to do so constitutes Plagiarism, and the college has strict policies and penalties for failure to comply. Under the Resources,  you will find links to sites that review how to format a paper or essay. I recommend that students use APA or Chicago Style to format their essays. Students should ask their instructor which format style they prefer you to use. Proofread your work. Make sure that you have looked for all of the spelling and grammatical errors and corrected them, and that you have organized your work into coherent paragraphs. Texas has 254 counties and many of these subdivisions are quite small both in terms of total area and total population. Our county lines came from the era where Texas was a part of Mexico. County lines were drawn so that government officials could travel anywhere within the county to address potential problems and back within the same day on horseback. These same counties persisted to the modern day, but many are far too small and not financially stable enough to absorb the costs incurred from law enforcement priorities such as drug enforcement. Watch and take notes on the following video: Based on what you just saw in the clip, answer: Why is Hudspeth county so overwhelmed with drug arrests? Who is ultimately to blame for the financial situation of the county? Is it county law enforcement? Federal drug policies? Or the offenders carrying contraband into Texas? Is legalization of marijuana a remedy for the problems of Hudspeth county? Now, you'll need to do some research about current Texas state policy regarding drugs. Include your sources. Is marijuana legal in Texas? What do polls say about whether Texans want marijuana legalized? Do you think Texas will ever make it legal or decriminalize it? Why or why not?

You have decided to create a magickal order. In either expository essay style or fictional format tell me about the order - its name, its mission/goals, its structure (and the why behind that decision), its magickal and philosophical influences (anything from the Renaissance forward up through Chaos Magick), the important symbols of the order (and why), and the types of magick and divination systems used. It may be more ceremonial magick or witchcraft-y in focus, but there should be evidence in your writings that you understand several of the different magickal systems and much of the history we have talked about in the second half of class: Renaissance Neoplatonism, Kabbalah, Geomancy, Enochian Magick, Rosicrucianism/Freemasonry, the Spiritworking/Animistic elements of witchcraft (during the time of the trials and in the modern era), the 19th century occult revival, the grand synthesis of the Golden Dawn, and Postmodern Magick (Crowley and the OTO, Gardner's Wicca and Traditional Witchcraft, and Austin Spare and Chaos Magick).

History of Western Civilizations II, Midterm Exam Instructions: You can also review the midterm description on the syllabus and make sure to look at the grading rubric below. Review the following images and answer      the questions that follow. You must incorporate      at least 1 primary source (historical document) that has been assigned to      you over the past 8 weeks for each question and you can reference the      textbook and lecture slides as you feel necessary to validate your points). Do not use       unassigned sources (history.com, Wikipedia, etc). You can submit your answers in written      or recorded form. If you choose writing consider 1-2 paragraphs a good      amount for each question (per question) if you decide to make a recording      for your response, you still need to provide primary source evidence to      support what you are saying. These are short answer questions not essays. I am available as needed in office      hours or the standard weekly zoom meet to discuss your questions about the      test. 16th Manuscript illustration by an unknown native artist showing a Nahuas victim of smallpox What was the Colombian exchange and      what impact did it have on Native peoples in the Americas and Caribbean      and on white Europeans in the colonies and in Europe. Stenka Razin in captivity, 1671 Who was Stenka Razin? What was      happening in Russia during the time period of his resistance, put what was      happening in Russia into context within the wider western world at the      time. Eugène Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People 1830 Which revolution is being depicted      here? What were the goals of its leaders and to what extent were they      successful or not? The 15th Amendment, Celebrated May 19th, 1870 by James C. Beard This illustration was made in      celebration of the 15th Amendment to the U.S. constitution. The Amendment      passed in February 1870 (5 years after the Civil War) and the first time      that the fourth of July was celebrated as a federal holiday was that July      (1870). Contextualize these (the 15th amendment and the 1st national      celebration of Independence Day) events within the wider western      civilizations context. In other words, what else was going on in the West      at this time and in what ways did these American experiences fit within      the era. Watch this clip, made by NPR (National      Public Radio) of Frederick Douglas’ great great… grandchildren reciting      his speech “What to the Slave is The Fourth of July”, written for and      spoken to a crowd of abolitionists in 1852. Remember that at this time, slavery      had still not been outlawed in the U.S., the civil war had still not      occurred, and European powers were only beginning to enter into a phase of      colonization that we call New Imperialism (this is a main topic in Week 9      of this class). Also keep in mind that this production was made in the      summer of 2020 when BLM (Black Lives Matter) protests were well underway      following the murder of George Floyd. What is your experience of the 4th      of July? What stands out to you from Douglas’ speech and from what his      descendants say after the recitation is over? To what degree if any do you      view contemporary commemorations such as the fourth of July or Memorial      Day as nation-building exercises and what holidays (that are not currently      federal holidays) do you think the U.S. should celebrate and why.
