This is the second of the two mini research papers that you will need to write this semester, and is worth 50 points, including 10 points for the peer reviews. Your mini paper must be at least 600 words (excluding citations) and written in APA format with appropriate citations. Please pick a disease of your choice among what you have learned in this course so far, and provide a review, answering the following questions: What is the name of the disease or condition you selected? Why is this condition or disease meaningful to you personally? This question is optional. You don't need to include it in your work if you are not comfortable answering it. List some statistics or epidemologic facts of this condition. What groups of people are particularly susceptible to this disease, why? How does the disease develop and progress? What are the risk factors, symptoms and three consequences of this disease or condition? What are common treatments recommended to care for a person with this disease or condition? What are two recent (within the last 2 years) research findings or advancements in treatment of this disease or condition? Note that you should write a coherent paper, instead of just answering a list of questions. Citations must be provided to verify the accuracy of the information you provide. It is highly recommended that you first write your draft in a word file with spelling and grammar checks and copy and paste to the blackboard. Please put a word count at the end of the post. To respect the efforts and time of your readers (your instructor and peers), please do not copy and paste from an artificial inteligence generated product.

As more nurse-managed health centers and clinics are providing care at more convenient locations shows has benefits to being developed due to an improved access to care for the nearby community, so it will be closer to certain homes and workplaces, therefore reducing travel time and costs associated with seeking care. Having a nurse-managed health center and clinicals available can be cost-effective because individuals can seek out help there, with concerns, early detection, and preventative help before having to go immediately to a hospital when it’s too late. The need for this change would be that it helps with accessibility to many individuals especially who live in rural areas or an underserved community. These individuals face barriers to accessing healthcare settings such as health centers or clinics that help with preventative care or enhancing health promotion. Visitors to these health centers or clinics are critical for both primary and preventative care and shown in 2011, 12.7 million visits were made to outpatient departments which shows how important it is to have these centers available to help the general population receive the care they need (Austin, 2017). By concentrating on addressing the needs and preferences of individuals and communities, nurse-managed health facilities can help prioritize patient-centered treatment. Solutions to obstacles that may occur at these centers include resourcing constraints such as limited funding and staffing shortages which can disrupt the care and sustainability of these clinics. To address these obstacles would have the nurses and healthcare organizations to advocate for increased funding to support these centers and help expand more nurse-managed centers and clinics to more locations.
As I prepare to graduate and enter the field of nursing, the concept of holistic patient care stands out most to me and it aligns perfectly with Florence Nightingale's Environmental Theory, which emphasizes manipulating the environment to promote healing. Nightingale's theory proposes that a patient's recovery is influenced by their surroundings – factors like ventilation, cleanliness, noise, and light all play a crucial role. Understanding the implications of this theory can have a significant impact across the spectrum of nursing administration, management, and education. Nightingale's theory can guide administrative decisions regarding infection control. Ensuring adequate funding for proper ventilation systems, maintaining rigorous cleanliness protocols. Nightingale's theory can inform the development of hospital-wide policies encompassing protocols for cleanliness, guidelines for noise reduction during patient care, and ensuring optimal light levels in different areas. The unsanitary conditions in the hospitals contributed to a high mortality rate. Nightingale believed that cleanliness and a healthy environment were essential to healing. Her Environmental Theory laid the foundation for modern practices in infection control (Gilbert, 2020). Nurse managers can utilize Nightingale's principles to improve unit design. This could involve optimizing room layouts for efficient patient care, ensuring adequate natural light, and creating designated quiet zones to contribute to a healing environment. Furthermore, nurse managers can train staff on the importance of environmental factors, empowering them to identify and address potential concerns that might impede patient healing. Nurse managers can also integrate patient education into their approach. Nurses, under their guidance, can educate patients on how to adjust their environment, such as controlling sanitation of water and air for optimal healing. Nightingale's theory provides a strong foundation for nursing education. Curriculums can be designed to integrate the concept of environmental manipulation and its impact on patient well-being. This could involve case studies where students analyze environmental factors affecting a patient's recovery or simulations where they practice creating a conducive healing environment. By integrating Nightingale's theory, nursing education fosters a holistic approach. Students learn to consider not just the patient's biological needs but also the psychological and social impact of their surroundings. This holistic perspective prepares future nurses to provide more comprehensive and patient-centered care.
Each student is required to read a journal article on issues addressing acquisitions. For your second paper, the article needs to address the major legislative acts that affect contracting and acquisitions. The journals must be research oriented, such as those found in the APUS library. You must cite references and have a bibliography at the end of the article.
WEEK 6 REFLECTION: How do/might ageism, (dis)ability and other sources of intersectionality affect EITHER an older adult I know OR how do they affect me now? The name of the reflection pretty much says it all, but in case you aren’t sure how to tackle this, below are a few suggestions. Use those that are helpful; ignore the others: Decide if you prefer to write about intersectionality in the context of an older or younger person. If you choose to write about an old person, it should be someone whom you know well enough that you can give examples of “isms” that have shaped their life. Revisit one of the power and privilege wheels from this week’s slides (along with other pre-work and in class materials) and identify the specific identities you will focus on; I recommend 3-4. If you choose to write about how intersectionality affects an old person, you do need to include age as one of the identities. If you choose to write about how intersectionality affects you now, you do not need to include age as an identity, but you may if it is one of your most important identities.
