CHOOSE ONE: 1) Consider the metaphor operating in Plato's Parable of the Cave. Are we living like we have blinders on, perceiving only a distorted reality? If so, how can we become enlightened? Again, give examples to illustrate how/why this is the case and what someone did about it. As such, also propose some public/historical figure to fit the role of the enlightened martyr suggested at the end of the video. 2) Pick one of these three celebrated maxims and take a position on it. Explain what you think the expression means and put it into practice, giving examples from your own life, lives of friends or acquaintances, or even a public figure if you prefer. Don’t discuss anything that’s too personal or uncomfortable. The intent is to express your understanding of the idea, as you see it, and demonstrate how it might work in real life. Protagoras: "Man is the measure of all things." Heraclitus the Obscure: "It is not possible to step in the same river twice." Socrates: "The unexamined life is not worth living." 3) Alternatively, formulate your own syllogism, explain why it’s logically consistent (which is different to it being necessarily true, remember), and defend your conclusion. A simple syllogism: dogs are carnivores (meat-eaters); Fido is a dog; therefore, Fido eats meat. Try for something more profound, obviously -- again, giving personal or public examples to illustrate and support your premises and conclusion. As a response to someone else’s syllogism, comment on why it is or isn't consistent and express opinions about the conclusion(s) drawn from it.
DO NOT USE ANY SOURCES OTHER THAN THE DALRYMPLE ARTICLE AND YOUR TEXTBOOK. YOU WILL ATTACH A FILE IN THE BOX AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE. Learning Objectives: Students will demonstrate their ability to construct arguments about issues of both personal and universal significance. Their writing should demonstrate that they can construct cogent, concise, and logically coherent arguments. Assessment: Students should demonstrate that they can distinguish the relevant points that form a logically coherent argument. They should also be able to construct criticisms which effectively undermine, through the use of appropriate counter-examples, some premise of that argument.

Use your own personal judgment and experiences as reasons for your choice.
Read each question—there may be more than one. Responses should be of sufficient length with proper grammar. Respond to at least two of your classmates' postings with each question. Responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time). You will lose marks if you do not satisfy the minimum number of posts. This feature will keep you engaged. Your response to your colleagues should be at least one full paragraph each (at least 4-5 sentences) for each post. Review your postings to see who has responded to you. Be sure to answer all questions. Include a bibliography using APA format. If you do not include a bibliography utilizing at least two different sources, you will lose marks. Document all your sources in the initial discussion post using APA format. Your initial post should look like a research paper where you document all your sources. For example, if you provide a definition of a principle, be sure to document your source in the sentence like this: "Cooper, Heron, Heward (2020) outline the definition of positive reinforcement as...." or "The definition of positive reinforcement is.... (Cooper, Heron, Heward, 2020)." Instructions Compare among the dimensions of ABA with the SEL Compencies (Task List A-5) Summarize in your own words all of the dimensions of ABA. (Write at least 2 paragraphs) How can the dimensions of ABA can be connected with SEL Competencies?
This is an example of the progression your research might take. Start with Wikipedia, follow that with the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, and move then to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. In the future, you should follow a similar path along with any required readings (in this case, The Tragedy of the Commons). You may not directly quote or use Wikipedia as a source for your paper, it is there for you to use to get up to speed before digging into your research. You may use examples, but you will still need to include a full scholarly definition of each, with commentary. You may use any scholarly source other than a dictionary, to include online video lectures. You may use Wikipedia as a starting point, but be aware that Wikipedia is not a scholarly source and therefore can never be quoted in your paper or counted as 1 of your 5 bibliographic citations. You will need to include inline citations in your essay (last name, date, pg#) and must still cite any sources beyond the five required that you use to write your paper in the references section of your essay. If you include an inline citation, there must be a corresponding entry in the reference list or bibliography.
In a paper, written in APA format using proper grammar and spelling, discuss the impact that the media has on the perception of law enforcement and law enforcement's interaction with the community. Include which of the media outlets has the most influence on public opinion and which appear to be the most objective in their reporting. Also, comment on how media might be able to facilitate an objective view of police interactions with community members. Submit your completed assignment to the drop box below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates. Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the ".docx" extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:
1. Read the following argument, then in 1-2 paragraphs evaluate it using the five criteria for evaluating arguments from our text. 2. In addition, search for fallacies within the argument. In 1-2 paragraphs, be sure to name, briefly define, and explain each fallacy you find. Though you won't lose points for not finding ALL of the fallacies, the more fallacies you find, the more points you will earn overall. There are two sides you can believe about gun control: either you believe that guns create crimes or that guns prevent crimes. People that believe that guns create crimes want to increase gun control to the point that nobody in the United States will be able to own a gun except for the police force and the military, which is a terrible idea. People that believe guns can prevent crimes want to decrease gun control so that any US citizen can have access to the ammunition and firearms that the 2nd Amendment guarantees. According to a recent study by the Guns Are Freedom Institute, homes with firearms are safer overall than homes without guns, therefore each home should have at least one firearm, if not more. The only people that disagree with high rates of gun ownership are stupid liberals, who care more about endangered panda bears than the lives of American families. They say that people who own guns don’t actually care about safety, but this isn’t true. I own a gun and I care a lot about safety. Also, we know that guns are safe because safety includes the right to self-defense, and what better way to defend yourself or someone you care about than with a firearm. My friend once shot and killed a home intruder in the middle of the night. There is no evidence that calling 911 would have also been effective for her, so she did the right thing. This shows that the best way to protect yourself is access to a firearm. Most people agree that we should have less strict gun control laws, therefore the right thing to do is make it easier to purchase firearms and ammunition, not make it more difficult. If we increase gun control, millions of lives will be lost.
11 Questions should be answered in paragraphs, I am leaving the answer lengths up to you. However, because the exam is divided into so many parts, you should be able to answer each part in a single substantive paragraph. This means that you should aim for, i.e., one substantive paragraph for 1-1 and another substantive paragraph for 1-b, etc.). Note, however, that there are some question components (e.g., 2-1, 3-1), which don't ask for an explanation. These can be answered in a single sentence.
