Post a thoughtful response, You can do either Option A on Ancient Mesopotamia or Option B on Egypt. Any simple citation style works, including something like this (Brand, Chapter One, Section 5). Option A: Ancient Mesopotamia Using our text and the following websites, discuss the religion and society of Mesopotamia. What type of religion did they have, what gods did they have, what type of personalities did the gods have, and how did the religion impact the development of the society and reinforce the power system? Why do you think this very ancient civilization had the type of beliefs that it did? Of what importance were the priests and the buildings known as ziggurats? What was offered at the ziggurats? What was the relationship of the people to their gods? Why did they believe people were created and what could they expect after death? Option B: Egypt Using the following websites, and our book, please describe the religion of Egypt and how it related to/helped build and organize their society. What was the mummification process, discuss why the Egyptians mummified their dead including some information on their religious beliefs, and analyze some consequences such a strong emphasis on death and the afterlife had on the development of Egyptian art, architecture, and political power. How do you account for the development from simple cave based rituals and Venus figurines to such highly sophisticated beliefs and practices --- do you think we are seeing the same fears/concerns/desires driving the development of more complex religion and social systems or is something really new happening?

Analytical Question for Writing #1: Loewen, Chapter 4 In answering the “analysis” portion of this writing assignment, please answer the question below: Loewen’s definition of” syncretism”: taking elements from two (or more) cultures to form something new. When Loewen speaks to Native Americans, he argues that modern Native American youth can avoiding choosing between “Western culture” and “Indian culture,” both of which, he points out, are already syncretic. Do you agree with him? Why or why not? Each responsive writing must be a MINIMUM 500 words, typed and double-spaced, AND conform to the format outlined below. You CANNOT use a font that is larger than 12 point (I’d recommend Times Roman). Many students find that they can and want to write much more. If your paper fails to meet this MINIMUM REQUIREMENT, you will receive a 0 for the assignment. You SHOULD NOT AND CANNOT do any outside research to complete these assignments. Papers will be subject to originality analysis by Turnitin.com. If Turnitin.com shows that you have included outside resources, then you will receive a 0% for that paper. Paper Format Part 1: Head this part, “Summary.” Because you are submitting electronically, you do not need a formal heading with you name, my name, the class, etc. Just put the heading at the top and begin writing. Essay: The American West The American West in the period from 1862 to 1900 was a region that offered great opportunities (economic, political, and social) to its inhabitants (including those who moved there from elsewhere). Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Please use specific historical evidence to support your claims. Sources Your essay should be based only on assigned course materials. Please do not use outside sources. Relevant sources are listed below. While it is not necessary to draw on all the sources listed, essays that are based on a wide range of course materials will be stronger than those that rely on only a few sources. Essay must draw on (and cite) at least four different primary source documents from among those listed below. Lecture Lecture 3: The American West, 1860s-1900 Primary Sources Homestead Act (1862) “Pun Chi Appeals to Congress” “Mattie Oblinger Describes Life on a Nebraska Homestead” “The Jorgensens Long for Other Danes” Testimony of Benjamin “Pap” Singleton Richard Pratt, “Kill the Indian...and Save the Man” Ellis Childers, “All That is Passed Away” Zitkala-Sa, “School Days of an Indian Girl” Elfido Lopez, “You Would Never Hear People Complain” General Instructions Writing matters. Please take care with your writing In particular, you should use complete sentences, organize your thoughts into paragraphs, and use correct grammar and language mechanics. Excessive errors may lead to reduced grades, so please proofread before submitting your exercise. Limit yourself to assigned course materials. This is not a research paper. Please use only those materials that are assigned for this class. Do not use sources from the internet or from other courses. One of the points of this exercise is to allow the instructor to assess how well you understand assigned course materials and how well you can integrate them into an analytical essay. Avoid plagiarism. Please make sure you use your own words. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade on this assignment. If you are unsure what constitutes plagiarism, please refer to the university's policy on academic honesty, consult the library's guide on plagiarism, or contact the instructor. Avoid excessive use of direct quotations. The bulk of your essay should be your ideas expressed in your own words. Excessive use of direct quotations makes it difficult for me to determine whether you comprehend the material.  Cite your sources. Any time you paraphrase or directly quote another author, you must provide a proper citation. Please use parenthetical citations that include the author’s last name and the appropriate page numbers. Example: “I think I should give the reasons for my being in Birmingham” (King, p. 29). If you wish to cite something from lecture, please provide the professor's last name and the title of the lecture (Strathman, "The American West, 1860s-1900"). You do not need a "Works Cited" page or bibliography.
