Hi there so this is a Critical Studies in Advertising and Consumer Culture Communications class. Students will submit a scholarly research paper on a topic of their choosing that must have some demonstrated connection to the course. A minimum of two of the course READINGS, and three peer-reviewed journal articles or academic book chapters must be applied. Original and creative topics are welcomed and encouraged. Students are encouraged to speak or email me about their idea to determine if it meets the criteria. Students will also be required to submit proof of their research process to support the academic integrity of the work (things like screenshots of article searches or downloads with clear time stamp, rough notes/rough drafts, etc). The paper must be entirely the work of the student who submits it (no human or AI can help you generate the paper in whole or in part. That is considered plagiarism and will result in a grade of zero and the Associate Dean’s office will be notified to determine further penalties). Format: ? Scholarly research essay with an introduction including a clear thesis statement that presents an argument (generally you should avoid using “I” and should use language appropriate to a scholarly paper.  Supporting paragraphs where scholarly evidence will be used to ‘prove’ your argument. Remember that you must provide clear citations within the essay itself when referencing information you have found in your sources. ? A clear conclusion that makes obvious the paper’s key points (and does not simply repeat the introduction). ? A works cited page. You include only the sources you have actually used in your paper in your works cited. Web sources and visuals should also be included. Citations must be properly formatted in a recognized style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc). ? You can include visuals with captions in the paper (or in an appendix in the back) but remember the length requirements covers text only. Remember to properly cite the visual material that you include

Visual Aid(s): Prepare your visual aids in a format suitable for presentation. Written Speech: Prepare the full text of your speech for submission. Persuasive Speech Questionnaire: Complete any required questionnaire related to your speech. ______________ KEYSTONE ASSESSMENT - PERSUASIVE SPEECH Instructions: Students must deliver a persuasive speech aimed at convincing their audience to consider their stance on a particular issue or argument. The speech must be 3 - 5 minutes in length. Additionally, students must provide a written outline for their speech. Topic Selection: Obesity Research: Conduct research on your topic using library databases to find evidence (e.g., explanations, examples, illustrations, statistics, analogies, quotations from relevant authorities) to support your position. Development: Use the persuasive speech worksheet and outline to develop your speech. Academic Sources: Include at least 5 academic sources from the LIRN database to support your position. Evaluation Criteria: Central Message: The main point/thesis/"bottom line"/"take-away" of your presentation. A clear central message is easy to identify; a compelling central message is also vivid and memorable. Delivery Techniques: Posture, gestures, eye contact, and use of voice. Effective delivery techniques include standing and moving with authority, maintaining frequent eye contact with the audience, using an expressive voice, and minimizing vocal fillers ("um," "uh," "like," "you know," etc.). Language: Vocabulary, terminology, and sentence structure. Effective language is appropriate to the topic and audience, grammatical, clear, and free from bias. Enhanced language is also vivid, imaginative, and expressive. Organization: The grouping and sequencing of ideas and supporting material in your presentation. A supportive organizational pattern typically includes an introduction, one or more identifiable sections in the body, and a conclusion. Enhanced organization reflects a purposeful choice among possible alternatives (e.g., chronological pattern, problem-solution pattern, analysis-of-parts pattern) to make the content easier to follow and more likely to accomplish its purpose. Supporting Material: Outlines, explanations, examples, illustrations, statistics, analogies, quotations from relevant authorities, and other information or analysis that supports the principal ideas of the presentation. Generally credible supporting material is relevant and derived from reliable sources. Highly credible supporting material is vivid and varied across types (e.g., a mix of examples, statistics, references to authorities) and helps establish the speaker’s credibility. References 1.   Describe a conflict that either a) you were involved in; b) witnessed and observed IRL; or c) watched in a fictional context like a television show, movie, or play. Be detailed about the people involved, the context (place, time, event etc) and what the conflict was. Basically set the scene for us. Then: Identify the perceived power bases of the people involved and the conflict style of each as well.  What cultural factors do you think, if any, influenced perceptions of power and conflict styles.  What nonverbal do you recall that would illustrate the perceived power and conflict styles of those involved (for example intense eye contact or yelling, using intimate space or public space). What principles of conflict, power, of interpersonal communication in general did you see. Finally what was the result of the conflict and what affect did it have on you (this can be answered even if the conflict was fictional. It must have had some impact if you remember it enough to talk about here). Did the experience influence how you engaged in conflict after that?

This assignment assesses: Your understanding of the relationship between texts ...

This assignment assesses: Your understanding of the relationship between texts and meaning. Your ability to apply communication theory to an artifact in a textual analysis. Your ability to write a paper with a coherent well-structured argument and clear concise writing. To accomplish this goal, you will select a particular textual artifact among the choices listed below and analyze it using two different communication theories. Your goal is to convey how the textual artifact produces meaning, and how different theories enable us to make sense of the artifact in different ways.  A textual artifact is anything that can be read or interpreted as having meaning.  For the purposes of this assignment, the artifact is one of the choices listed below.  Make sure to identify clearly the artifact you selected. You must **briefly** (2-3 sentences) describe the textual artifact and research its context. This might include addressing: When was it put into circulation? Who or what organization put it into circulation? Who is the likely audience? What are its main textual features (visual images, language, metaphors, arguments, colors, etc.)? Apply two communication theories to examine and explain the artifact from differing points-of-view. Use only theories that we have covered this semester. **Briefly** define and explain each theory before applying it to the artifact. How are these specific theories relevant to the artifact you are analyzing, and how do they inform (give meaning) to the artifact now that you can reflect upon it from a theoretical framework? Use specific examples (textual evidence) from your artifact to do your analysis. Do not try and combine the theories into one analysis. The goal of this exercise is to use two different theories separately.  Each theory should provide unique insight. So, divide the paper into two sections: one for each theory. Do not use a theory that you already used in the Communication in Action paper. If the theory is not on this semester’s schedule, you will not get credit for it. The word limit for this assignment. You will be penalized for being under or over the word count. The paper should include an introduction and a conclusion. In the introduction, you should make a claim about the meaning the artifact produces, and prepare the reader for what’s to come. In other words, it should include a clear thesis statement and a preview of the main points (sections) to come in the body of the paper. Your conclusion should explain what you’ve gained from the analysis and connect it to the thesis statement you’ve offered about the meaning of the artifact.  Artifact attached below and link Uvalde school shooting mural: https://latino.si.edu/exhibitions/mural-gallery

Please write an essay outline and the full essay for the following assignment requirements and the topic/case study I've chosen You can send just the outline by next Wednesday, and have the final essay ready at by the due date, May 8. Essay Assignment: Populism, Digital Media and the Public Sphere In an era marked by the widespread proliferation of digital media tools, the intersection of populism and the public sphere has taken on new dimensions. In this essay assignment, you will critically analyze the role of digital media in shaping and mediating populist discourse in the public sphere. You will explore how digital platforms influence the dissemination of populist messages, these platforms’ influence on public opinion and the dynamics of political participation in the digital era. By drawing on both contemporary research and recent sources, you will disentangle the complex interplay between populism, digital media, and the public sphere. You are required to incorporate contemporary examples of populist movements leveraging digital media in the public sphere. For instance, the rise of the QAnon conspiracy movement and its dissemination through virtual platforms such as social media and online forums, illustrate how digital media can amplify populist narratives and mobilise followers. Similarly, the use of digital tools by political figures like Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil or Matteo Salvini in Italy provide rich case studies of the ways in which populist leaders harness digital media to connect directly with their base, circumventing traditional media gatekeepers and, as a result, shape public discourse.  In addition, you should reflect on the evolving nature of digital technologies, considering advancements such as AI, data analytics and deepfake technology, and their potential (or real) impact on the public sphere. As digital platforms continue to evolve, it is essential to critically assess their role in shaping public discourse and democratic processes, and to find strategies for promoting transparency, accountability and civic engagement in the digital age. You must also integrate a personal perspective into the essay to complement the evidence you provide form scholarly sources.  AI Use:  You are permitted to use generative AI tools to generate topics and outlines, to provide constructive feedback and to proofread. Using generative AI to write your essay is strictly forbidden and violates the University’s academic integrity policies.  Essay Topic: "The Impact of Narendra Modi's Digital Campaigning on Populist Discourse in the Indian Public Sphere" Research Question: "How does Narendra Modi's use of digital media exemplify the intersection of populism and the public sphere in contemporary politics?" Assignment Background: This essay will critically examine the role of digital media in shaping and mediating populist discourse within the Indian public sphere, focusing on the digital campaigning strategies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The analysis will explore how Modi's adept use of social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, and Whatsapp) has influenced the dissemination of populist messages, altered public opinion dynamics, and transformed political participation in India's digital era. here's a link discussing my chosen case study: https://time.com/5512032/whatsapp-india-election-2...
