With this activity, we aim to exemplify the characteristics of communication companies in the United States based on the content studied in module 3. This represents an opportunity to delve into the content and demonstrate mastery, not only theoretically, of this submodule. Present and explain 1 example of a communication company in the United States in which some of the characteristics studied in the module are present.
Response 1: reply in 5-7 sentences My favorite two chapters from the recent lectures are chapters one and two. Based on my understanding from chapter one, self-monitoring could make me a more competent communicator. The examples in the chapter showed the advantages and the differences that monitoring the words said in a conversation could have while communicating. Although there are other characteristics of communication competence, self-monitoring allows people to observe the other person and know whether they should keep moving forward with the conversation or rephrase anything that could have been misinterpreted. Sometimes observing could help guide the conversation and avoid difficult situations that could expand unintentionally. For example, whenever I talk to my friends about a disagreement I try to measure my tone and look at their facial expressions. Their facial expression usually guides the conversation and lets me know when I should rephrase my statement. In this way, I can self-monitor in order to avoid making the disagreement worse. In addition to chapter one, I also learned a lot from chapter two. Chapter two was mostly about the differences between face-to-face communication and social media. Based on this chapter interpersonal communication and social media have advantages and disadvantages. An advantage of using social media as a method of communication is that everything said or posted is premeditated. For example, my friend had met a guy through social media, and they texted for a while. After some time, they decided to meet up and she noticed that the way he responded to her was not as polite as before. As the day continued, she noticed that the person she had in front of her differed from the one she texted. It was the same guy but with a different mindset. He was rude and seemed like he was talking before thinking. In this example, my friend saw the difference between the way the guy would text her versus how he would talk to her in person. He showed that his personality overall was different than what it appeared. Therefore, not everything is what it seems like on social media, so it is better to interact in person instead of using certain online platforms. In this case, social media has an equal disadvantage and advantages. So, using face-to-face communication helps in knowing who the person is, and social media can also help people think before they send something hurtful. Response 2: 5-7 sentences In Chapter 1, I learned about the importance of communication and how my approach can vary from one person to another. Effective communication is not a natural ability and I often observe people from my generation struggling with this skill. It is crucial to view communication as a transactional process where both parties send and receive messages in an appropriate manner. Interpersonal relationships can be difficult to maintain without sending the correct message from both ends. I learned how mediated and face-to-face communication can be effective in different situations. The way you approach a person and your communication competence impacts your delivery and how they feel about your words. At my job, I work with people with a similar age demographic. However, they do not always have the same sense of humor. Some people prefer you to ask them to do a task directly. Other people carry a sense of entitlement and will not do a task even if you directly ask them. I was working with a lady who had a sense of humor and liked to chat a lot. I noticed that I was doing a lot of the tasks all at the same time and got a little overwhelmed. She was doing the easiest position, allowing her time to grab the drive-thru window. I made a joke about me doing all of the work and she got offended and said, "You could have just asked me to do it." I realized that communication competence is important and I should have analyzed the situation better. If I asked her directly, there would have been no hard feelings about doing the task. In Chapter 2, I learned about the impacts of mediated communication in depth. This chapter intrigued me as a Generation Z person who grew up surrounded by technology. When I look around at my peers, everyone is buried in their phones. Mediated communication is a staple in my generation through different messaging and social media applications. It differs from face-to-face communication because you can have social support from someone you have never met in real life. Many people from my generation also have "internet friends." There could be potential downsides to this because it opens the door for more superficial relationships and relational deterioration. On social media, I notice that people like to post indirect messages about a situation instead of directly reaching out to the other party to discuss the situation. Behavior similar to this opens the door for other people to be involved in the situation. The message could end up rubbing off on people who are not originally involved in the incident. I believe keeping social media out of personal matters that could be handled one-on-one is a way to effectively communicate with people.
1. Does Socrates really believe Euthyphro is wise about the nature of piety? Support your answer with text. 2. In two sentences, describe what basic question Socrates is trying to answer in the Euthyphro. 3. What sentence comes before the following sentence, “Tell me, then—Is not that which is pious necessarily just? 4. What do you thing the word “pious” means in the Dialogue? 5. Finish this sentence “Then piety, Euthyphro, is an art which gods and…..?” Answer this questions and for this you have to answer one question and give me respond to classmates Euthyphro CD In the Euthyphro they discuss the nature of Piety. Just beneath this discussion is a deeper question regarding what makes an action good. For example when you help some body in need or when you tell the truth you are doing something good. But what makes these actions and other good? So in the CD you will address the following question: What makes an action good? Grading: Alright so those are the questions. Answering these questions in an original post will get you 5 points. But your not done. You'll get 3 more points for a second post (a response to classmate) and an additional 2 points for a third post (again, another response to a classmate) for a total of 10 points!
Mass Media What is the role of the mass media in the creation of moral panics, according to Critcher? Please be nuanced in your response; not only does he distinguishes between various types of media; he has also an intricate explanation about the media’s role in the creation of moral panics. Although Best does not use the term “moral panic,” his discussion of wilding and freeway violence indicates that they could be understood as cases of moral panic. How (in which way) does Best’s chapter fit with Critcher’s argument about the relationship between the media and moral panics? Does Best’s chapter confirm or challenge Critcher’s argument? How? How does Best’s chapter about wilding and freeway violence illustrate the socially constructed nature of a social problem? Was there a consensus about what kind of social problem freeway violence was indicative of? If not, what were the different definitions of the problem? And what were the implications of the different definitions? When answering the last part, remember the class discussion: each definition of a social problem has a specific prescription for solutions implied by the definition. How do you think Steffens’s chapter relates to the other readings assigned for this session? What was the impact of his crime wave? Social media The article by Walsh updates moral panic theory with a discussion of the digital/social media’s role in the creation moral panics. Walsh argues that despite its potential for democratizing public communication by providing access for wider public, social media also provide tools and venues for manipulating content and provoking more panics about the usual issues and groups. How do social media contribute to more severe moral panics, according to Walsh? What are the technical affordances that create and amplify content and reactions? How are they used to bring fringe ideas into prominence? Walsh discusses some recent moral panics about Covid-19, Brexit and Australian bush fires. What were these moral panics about? Who were the ‘folk devils’? How was the social media central to the creation of these moral panics? What is Walsh’s overall argument about the relationship between digital/social media and moral panics? How does Ingraham and Reeves’s article, “New Media, New panics” illustrate the social media’s role in the creation of moral panics? How do the new, discrete moral panics that are afforded by the new technologies differ from moral panics via traditional media?
Overview The purpose of this activity is for student's to articulate ways in which language reflects cultural assumptions. You will be responsible for identifying how each statement may reflect sexist or racist language tendencies. You and your classmates will also be responsible for offering alternative wording to reduce potential perceived racist or sexist connotations. Remember—discussing race, gender, and similar issues can be challenging—if there is inflammatory, disrespectful or otherwise inappropriate language within your post I will block it, and we will have a conference to determine further consequences if necessary. It is quite likely that some of the statements will be bothersome to you (as they are to me), and that others will not. As communication students and scholars we are challenged to think critically about the world and words around us. In short, this assignment is a practice in how can we use human communication to authentically and ethically engage in diversity affirming communication encounters. Action Item Read the following 10 statements. 1. I now pronounce you man and wife. 2. You can tell that they are the good guys because they wear white hats. 3. “And now for breaking news, let’s go to our man on the street interview.” 4. Let’s see if we can’t make something good happen by using a little black magic. 5. I can’t believe Sarah kept her last name when she married. 6. John stayed home to babysit his son while his wife ran a few errands. 7. My friend Ranjet is from India, but he acts like a regular guy. 8. I know a male nurse and a woman pilot. 9. Asian people are really short. Most of the women are about 5 feet, and the men aren’t much taller. 10. Blacks are really confrontational. Copy and Paste the above 10 statement to Post as a reply to this discussion Under each numbered sentence, articulate how the language used in each of the above-sentences could be perceived to be sexist (suggesting one sex is better or the standard) or racist (suggesting one race is BEST or standard) or any other problematic bias in society. Your analysis should include: A brief full-sentence explanation (1-2 sentences) of how each sentence (1-10) could be perceived as sexist or racist or otherwise problematic. Alternative wording to reduce or avoid the possible sexist/racist/otherwise problematic connotations. Your post could look like the following: 1. Original Sentence: Why the original sentence wording may be problematic. How you would revise the potentially problematic sentence to be a more effective and mindful sentence.
Nicholar Carr and Google both agree that the search engine is changing our lives, but they have different views on whether this is a good or a bad development. Thinking about Google’s impact in your own life, do you feel that Google is a positive or a negative force for knowledge? Is it helping us approach an online utopia, or is it contributing to the dystopian destruction of knowledge as we know it? Or is it somewhere in between?
Think about who you are, what you know, and whom you know when it comes to starting a new business. Who am I? What are my passions, dreams, and desires when I think about starting a business? What do I know that would help me when starting a business? Whom do I know who would help me when starting a business? Example Here is an example of "food, coffee, dessert". I am offering this example to help you organize this part: Who am I? [part a.] Example: Food and beverage fill me with enthusiasm, passion! I always pull my car over when I drive by an interesting cafe/restaurant or a popular spot for tea/coffee. I also feel passionate about and other cultures, history, and travel. Every time I visit another location, I make it a point get to know and experience the culture and history of its people, especially around food and celebrations. There are several dreams I have for a new business, including my own cafe/restaurant and/or bakery. I have a knack/talent for cooking, baking, entertaining. My grandparents owned several great cafes/restaurants. I cultivated my talent for food with my grandparents since I was a little kid. What do I know? [part b.] Example: I have cooked and baked with my grandparents and my mother since I was a child, which developed and enhanced my innate talents around food. It is definitely a hobby that I love. I have also taken several classes on baking and cooking over the years. Everyone loves what I make. Moreover, I have a business degree from CSUN and solid proven marketing and organizing skills that I have solidified after working for years in several industries. I am interested in putting my cooking/baking/marketing/organizing skills to work through owning a food business. Whom do I know (network of clients, potential partners/employees, investors)? [part c.] Example: Some of my friends also love to cook, bake, entertain. Many of them want to own a restaurant. My mother has personal relationships with all the suppliers of the restaurants that my grandparents owned. Some of my friends and family members also want to start a successful restaurant. Finally, I have several professional colleagues who have invested in the restaurant business before. Try to keep it simple though this is quite involving and complex. Doing this work is a truly invaluable exercise. This is because it is about what's real to you, what feels great, what you are doing very well naturally (as opposed to what you are told to do or think you should do or what is expected of you for one reason or another). Also you need to think about where you are going with it all and who you know who can help you grow your enterprise (potential suppliers, customers, employees etc. ) So be true to yourself/others and complete this part first. Then go on to your project ideas.
Considering that the creation of the Golden Record was an effort to send a snapshot of humanity into space, what would you send out into space to represent humanity today? Explain why you selected your item.
Objectives In this part of the activity, you will use data from the four maps below to try to determine where the plate boundaries are. The first map shows worldwide earthquakes (Seismology). The second shows volcanoes (Volcanology). The third map shows the land elevation and ocean depth (Geography). The fourth map shows the age of the seafloor (Geochronology). This assignment addresses: Course Objective 2: Use seafloor features to determine the location of plate boundaries and the motion of tectonic plates. Student Learning Outcome 1: Students will be able to use seafloor features to interpret the motion of the tectonic plates. Supplies Needed Pencil, Colored Pencils, access to a printer, and digital camera or scanner. Print the Blank World Map (PDF). Download Blank World Map (PDF). If you don't have access to the above, you can digitally "markup" the map image as noted below: Blank World Map (.docx) Download Blank World Map (.docx): To digitally markup, open in MS Word, and click Draw. You can also use MS Paint on a PC, use Photos on a Mac (Edit - Markup), or Use Markup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. If you have access to a printer, download and print the Blank World Map (under "Supplies Needed"). If you don't have access to a printer, you can download the map onto your device and draw on it digitally. Your task here is to apply what you learned about plate tectonics and the features associated with different types of plate boundaries in the lab introduction to sketch a map of worldwide plate boundaries onto your Blank World Map using only the data on the four maps. Using only the data on the four maps (no outside resources, including the Internet, textbooks, or other people!), sketch (in pencil or a thin black line) where you think the plate boundaries are onto your Blank World Map. Hint: there are between 12 and 15 plates. All lines should connect like puzzle pieces. Do not use color on this map, only use a pencil or a thin black line. This is your rough draft plate boundaries map. Do not label the plates on your rough draft map. Pay close attention to detail (features such as island chains and narrow seas should provide hints as to the locations of plate boundaries). This part of the lab activity should take you about 1 hour. Take a photograph (or save the digitally marked-up image) of your rough draft plate boundaries map.
