Bonus Discussion: Viral Transcription and Translation (This is NOT a yellowdig discussion) Find a recent (within the last 5 years) scientific article or news article that provides a description of transcription and translation of viral genetic material or how treatment for a virus targets transcription and translation of the viral genetic material. Remember to explain how the viral genetic material is transcribed and translated or how the treatment interferes with the process, and don't forget to comment on other posts by your peers. The article I chose is a review paper exploring the possible effectiveness of microRNAs (miRNAs) as a treatment for COVID-19. miRNAs are short sequences of RNA that do not code for a protein. Instead, they are known to interfere with mRNA translation by binding to a site on the mRNA and stimulating the breakdown of the mRNA strand. This prevents translation of the mRNA, thereby preventing the synthesis of the protein. In the case of COVID-19, some miRNAs may be able to reduce viral replication in infected individuals. Other miRNAs have been identified as possible treatment therapies because they reduce inflammation and tissue damage in the lungs of patients and can even recruit more macrophages to the site of the infection. This work is still ongoing but has potential for being developed into a treatment for COVID-19 patients. How will you promote healthy habits for primary prevention in a way that respects the cultural beliefs in the community? What screenings or check-ups will you include for secondary prevention, and how will you make them accessible?
