Organic Food: What It Is and Why It Matters Organic food is grown without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or added hormones in animals. Organic farmers use natural methods like composting, crop rotation, and raising animals in healthier environments. Many people choose organic food because they believe it is healthier, safer, and better for the planet (USDA, n.d.). One of the biggest benefits of organic food is that it reduces exposure to harmful chemicals. Some research suggests that organic fruits, vegetables, and grains may have more nutrients and antioxidants than conventionally grown food (Mie et al., 2017). Organic farming is also better for the environment because it avoids polluting soil and water with synthetic chemicals, encourages biodiversity, and promotes healthier ecosystems (Reganold & Wachter, 2016). However, there are also downsides to organic food. One major issue is cost—organic food is often more expensive than conventionally grown food, making it harder for everyone to afford (Smith-Spangler et al., 2012). Another problem is that the idea of “organic” is sometimes exaggerated by the media. While organic food does have benefits, scientific studies have not proven that it is always significantly healthier than non-organic food. Additionally, the USDA’s “organic” label may not be as meaningful as people think. Some critics argue that large food companies have influenced organic standards, making the label more about marketing than real quality differences (EBSCO, n.d.). The most important thing to know about organic food is that while it has advantages, it is not perfect. It is great for the environment and can reduce exposure to certain chemicals, but it is also expensive and sometimes overhyped. The key is to make informed choices—eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, whether organic or not, is what truly matters for a healthy diet. References EBSCO. (n.d.).
