This module focuses on how healthcare is shaped by politics. For this discussion, your task is to describe a health policy debate in the United States. You will identify the underlying problem or related problems and then propose an innovative solution. You will take into account the political feasibility and potential impact of different policy options. This discussion does not merely ask you to provide your opinion on a health policy issue. Instead, it requires you to research a health care policy debate and explain the arguments on both sides of the issue before endorsing an existing proposal or proposing your own solution. Instructions For this discussion, find a healthcare issue that has recently been the subject of political debate, either at the national level (such as the ACA) or at the state level. (There may be some issues, such as the issue of Medicaid expansion, that relate to both federal and state policy.) Describing the policy debate: 150–250 words. Your first task in this discussion is to name the debate, explain what historical context and policy areas or problems it relates to, and then identify who is on each side of the argument. Explain the debate in terms of what the issue is, what the two (or more) sides of the debate are, and what political and commercial forces support each side. Judging the debate: 250–350 words. Your second task is to describe what the major arguments for each side of the debate are. You will evaluate the credibility of these major arguments, based on what evidence you can find and any principles you find relevant. In researching the debate, make sure to find and cite at least two sources advocating for each “side” or solution of the debate. Do not rely exclusively on materials that lean toward one side of the debate (or one specific solution). Declaring a winner, or proposing a new option: 150–200 words. Your final task is to either propose an innovative solution to the problem or, if you feel that the best solution has already been found, advocate for that solution. Levins, H.
