What are the lessons Martin thinks we can learn from studying the TVA? In what sense did New Deal programs represent a new iteration of the racial bribe? What did you find most interesting about the reading? What remains unclear to you about the reading? Your answers should include the following three things: 1) Answers to the Reading Questions Every week (generally on Friday) I will post a set of reading questions on Canvas. The core of your notes should consist in an attempt to answer these questions in your own words accompanied by page numbers in parenthesis that point to the parts of the reading from which you are drawing your answers. 2) What did you find most interesting about the reading? Please describe something you found interesting about the reading. This could be an idea, an argument, a passage. This can be any aspect of the reading that you found interesting, counterintuitive, or illuminating. 3) What remains unclear to you about the reading? Pose your doubt as an analytical question. The question can be about a concept, an argument, a passage or even a sentence you are having difficulty understanding. You want to pose a question that can be answered through further analysis of the text. Productive analytical questions identify issues that were not sufficiently discussed by the author, ambiguities, contradictions, reasoning problems, or unconvincing evidence or examples. You must preface the question with a short comment that demonstrates that you have done the reading and thought carefully about the issue. Example of an Unproductive Question 1: “I don’t understand why Marx states that capitalism is necessary.” [Note this isn’t even a question! It’s a statement. And it doesn’t invite comments or discussion.] Example of an Unproductive Question 2: “Marx states that capitalism is a necessary stage of historical development. Why?” [Better than the last question, but it is not prefaced by a comment that shows that you’ve attempted to think through the issue.] Example of a Productive Question: “Marx claims over and over again that capitalism is based on exploitation. He argues that it alienates workers from what they produce and from others. But on page XX he seems to praise capitalism and claims that it is necessary. Why? This seems inconsistent to me. How can a system based on exploitation be positive or necessary?” If you feel confident about your understanding of the reading and don’t have any questions, point out something you would like to know more about. For example, you might state something like this, “Alexander doesn’t really pay much attention to the incarceration of the small subset of people imprisoned for violent crimes. I’d love to know what her views are about this population and what would constitute a more humane way of dealing with these type of incidents.” Expectations for the Answers You are expected to write your answers without the assistance of AI technology. Remember, you must copy-paste your answers onto the corresponding assignment tab in Canvas. Keep in mind that these are short answers to questions, so your writing doesn’t have to be as elaborate as it would be for a paper. If you prefer, you can answer the questions using bullet points, but you must write complete sentences. Just try to be clear and answer the questions in a straightforward manner. For more details about the expectations for this assignment, please make sure you read the rubric (below) that will be used to grade your answers.

Optional Include quotes from class readings; if you do, proper citation rules apply, for example, (author’s last name, year published, page number). Include material from lecture slides; if you do, cite lecture as, for example, (Week 4). Do not plagiarize lecture slides! Include a reference list at the end. Functionalist Theory & Conflict Theory – For each question, your answer should be 3-5 paragraphs. Functionalists’ claims about inequality in society focus on differences between economic groups. Discuss three points or ideas the Functionalists use to explain why there is economic inequality in society. Another way to think about this is – Discuss three reasons the Functionalists offer to explain why there is economic inequality in society. Functionalists’ ideas about the functions of education focus on the ways in which schools help maintain society over time (across many generations), specifically societies that have a formal class structure. Discuss three points or ideas the Functionalists use to explain the purposes of education in society. Another way to think about this is – Discuss three reasons the Functionalists offer to explain how schools help sustain societies over time. Conflict Theorists also take an economic approach to explaining inequality in society, but in ways very different than Functionalists. Discuss four points or ideas the Conflict Theorists use to explain why there is economic inequality in society. If it’s useful, you can discuss these four points or ideas as critiques of Functionalists’ ideas. Conflict Theorists also claim that schools function to help maintain society over time. Step 2 (by Sunday night--extended due date) (20 points) : Responding to others. Watch/read another student’s work in your group and analyze it in terms of both content and style in a minimum 300-word post. You need to analyze someone’s project that has not been by another classmate in depth. In order to do this, once someone in your group posts a paper/presentation or information about a presentation and you have posted yours, you can “claim it” on the discussion board.  You can just respond to the post and state, “ I, ________, intend to analyze this project.”  The first person that claims it will be the one who can analyze it before Sunday, following the response requirements posted on the Project Guidelines. You should also provide short responses to the others in your group as well.   PART II  Response            The second part of the assignment requires you to analyze another classmate’s project in terms of her/his application of deviance theories and class concepts and materials.  You should assess whether the use of the theoretical concepts is appropriate or whether another theory or other theories would better explain or enrich their analysis. In addition, you should consider whether the writer integrated important points from two peer-reviewed scholarly articles written after 2021 into their paper and included references in the presentation. Your response to another classmate’s paper should be a minimum of 250 words in length.  Be sure to add something new to the discussion to demonstrate your understanding of class material, rather than simply mirroring back what the original person wrote.            You need to attempt to analyze someone’s project that has not been by another classmate. In order to do this, once someone in your group posts a project, you can “claim it” on the discussion board for your group if you have posted your project.  You can just respond to the post and state, “ I, ________, intend to analyze this paper/podcast/narrated PP/video.”  The first person that claims a project will be the one who is allowed to analyze it in depth.  But, of course, you should read/watch/listen to all the projects in your group and give quick feedback to the others as well (required).

The point of this exercise is to breach a norm that is not normally broken.  Take a common activity, and alter it slightly.  While norms can be individually specific, you must break a social norm, preferably a folkway.  This SHOULD NOT include breaking any laws or major mores.  In fact, the more common the activity, the better the effect will be upon those observing you.  While this exercise is meant to be entertaining as well as educational, students are expected to act in a responsible and mature manner during the course of the assignment.  While you may conduct your breach on campus, do not disrupt any classes. The exercise is to be done in groups of 3-4 persons.  Ideally, these are classmates, but if necessary you can also work with friends or family.  While one person performs the breach, the others are to observe and record the reactions of others.  Do so without affecting the breach or the people you are observing.  You need to be removed from the event to some degree. Each person should do the breach exercise at least once, possibly twice, so as to have ample reactions from which to draw for your paper. As for the individual who is engaged in the exercise, remember that you must maintain yourself as though you are doing nothing wrong and that your actions are completely acceptable.  Do not inform anyone that this is an experiment.  Do not attempt to offer any explanation for your actions.  This includes responding politely to those who speak with you, etc.  Don’t act crazy!!! As you analyze this experience, it may be helpful to ask yourself the following questions: --Which breach did you conduct? --How did it feel to be the violator? --Who were the other participants? --What were their reactions? When you write the paper, you will be take a position concerning a concept or theory discussed in class or in the readings.  Then, using the reactions of others who witnessed your breach, you will support or challenge the concept or theory.  You are expected to draw from the readings, lectures, and discussions in your paper.  This is a normal academic paper, which includes an intro, body, and conclusion as follows: Introduction  Questions to answer include:  what are norms?  What are they for?  What do they give to individuals and to society?  What happens when they are breached?  Why do people care?  Then, give us the purpose of the experiment and of the paper. What you did Please explain the norm that you breached, and show what the typical fulfillment of the norm looks like in our society. Then, briefly summarize the reactions you received (you should not talk about them individually yet—just a brief summary of them all). Interpretation  In this section, you will look for patterns of reactions in your experiment, and in your group members.’  How did women tend to respond?  Men?  Older people? Younger?  How did ethnicity or culture seem to affect the reactions of those around you?  How did your own characteristics govern how your behavior was received?  You will want to look at reactions in the context of socialization, and think of how each group has been socialized to respond to your behavior. Theoretical Analysis  You will want to pick two or more theories from our course to explain how and why you performed, and others responded to your breach.  This is NOT the time to include as many terms as you can from the course; instead, select two theories, explain how they work in detail, and then apply them to specific examples from your experiment.  You can draw on any group member’s experience in writing this part, and show how the theory operates in these experiences.  Some good theories to include in this part come from our social psychology chapter, chapter 4. Conclusion So, the big question is….did people notice your breach?  Why do even mild modifications of “normal” behavior bother people?  You will want to include the “taken for granted view” in your overall analysis of this experience.v
