Description Choose a company and write about its strategic corporate social responsibility.  It must be a company with which you have a personal relationship (e.g. a family member's company; your favorite coffee shop, your employer).  You must be able to contact a company representative (and name them in your paper with their contact information in a citation) and ask questions to gain information for your paper. 1.  Write about what the company does.  (In other words, do not assume that I am familiar with the company.)   2.  Write about the company's strategic corporate social responsibility and how it addresses, and balances, the interests of its various stakeholders. 3.  Identify its officer in charge of corporate social responsibility.  If there is no such officer, find out if anyone is designated to address CSR.  You may find that the company has not thought much about CSR, and that's ok.  Discuss how you explained CSR to that company, and how you can see that they are socially responsible (e.g., they treat their employees really well), even if they didn't realize it, or, how you wish they were more responsible (e.g., you've noticed a lot of food waste at the end of your shift). 4.  Obtain its ethics guidelines or code of conduct and include the first page as an exhibit to your paper, or if it is available online, include the URL.  If the company does not have one, then address that.  For example, explain that you asked, and that they do not have formal guidelines, but they operate their business based on their grandmother's motto that you treat everyone as family.   5.  Optional - If there was a crisis (e.g., the company was caught using overseas child labor) that changed the company's approach to CSR, write about that crisis, and how the approach to CSR changed.  You need to cite your company contact and the code of conduct.  If you research the company online, include citations for those sources.  However, keep in mind that this should not be a report of what you have read about the company.  This should be about your experience with the company so that you can discuss your point of view as a stakeholder.

Description Recently, the US Supreme Court issued its decision in the case of 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis.  By a 6-3 vote, the Court has created a carve out to public state accommodation laws that bar discrimination based on sexual orientation.  The Court ruled that a proclaimed Christian graphic artist who wants to design wedding websites can refuse to work with same-sex couples. The Court created this exception on the basis of 1st Amendment free speech. Summaries of this Court decision (including the full Court opinion) can be found in the links below.  For a possible (3) points extra credit, please answer the following questions: 1.  What potential ramifications does this decision have on businesses? Does this open the door for private businesses to legally discriminate against other protected classes of people? 2.  Based on this decision, can the tables be turned - can a private business such as a lawyer refuse to represent a client based on their political orientation? For example, if a lawyer finds individuals who identify as MAGA to be adverse to their personal beliefs, and as their work involves the business of speech, can the lawyer expressly decline cases purely on the basis of political affiliation?     3.  Does your answer in question #2 change if the facts are revised such that the lawyer refuses to represent any clients whose religious beliefs differ from those of the lawyer? https://www.npr.org/2023/06/30/1182121291/colorado-supreme-court-same-sex-marriage-decision#:~:text=By%20a%206%2Dto%2D3,creating%20a%20message%20she%20opposesLinks to an external site.. https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-gay-rights-website-designer-aa529361bc939c837ec2ece216b296d5Links to an external site.

Description THE CASE OF THE GIFT OR NOT! Ruben, age ninety, had a very valuable violin collection consisting of 10 violins, cases and bows. He was frail and was helped by a niece Sahar, who was an excellent violinist. Two weeks after making a new will, Ruben told his niece that he was going to give her the violin collection. “It’s yours,” he said, adding that he would temporarily hold on to the collection for safekeeping. Sahar happily accepted. That same day he also sent Sahar a letter in which he said, “I give you my violin collection, and when I die, it will be yours.” Ruben died five weeks later. In his will dated prior to the letter, which did not refer to the violins, he left his entire estate to his two children. Sahar brought suit against the estate to have the violin collection declared her property. The Trial Sahar testified at the trial about the help she had given her uncle over a period of fifteen years. She produced the letter her uncle had sent her and recalled their many conversations during which her uncle had promised to give her the violins. There was additional testimony that Ruben’s children had never even picked up a violin and had been estranged from their father for years. The Arguments at Trial Sahar’s attorney argued that the collection belonged to Sahar because Ruben had gifted the violins to her during his lifetime and that there was symbolic delivery. He further argued that Ruben’s keeping possession of the violins was solely to protect them and in no way invalidated the gift. He also argued that to deprive Sahar of the collection that her uncle obviously wanted to give her would be against Ruben’s wishes. The children’s attorney argued that the will was validly executed after the letter was sent and promises made orally or in writing do not constitute valid gifts. They further argued that actual and not symbolic delivery is an essential requirement for a gift to be deemed valid. Questions to Discuss Who has the stronger argument, Sahar or Ruben’s children? Why? If you were the jury hearing this case, for whom would you decide? Why? Should considerations of fairness and the intentions of the person making the will take precedence over a validly executed will? What problems do you think could arise if oral or written promises were considered under the circumstances of this case?
