How to cite a Dissertation (Student's Guide)

Citing a dissertation varies based on the style guide you follow:

  • Harvard: Include the author, submission year, title in italics, degree type, awarding institution, URL, and access date.

Additional points to consider:

  • For unpublished dissertations, specify the institution and its location.

  • If the dissertation is published on a private website, only provide the URL.

  • In the text, insert the citation number immediately after mentioning the source, even mid-sentence.

  • If an entire paragraph references the same source, place the citation number at the end of the paragraph.
