you will start with a topic paragraph and a List of 5 Academic Sources, upload an in-class presentation, and turn in your research paper as a series of short papers. Essay Assignment | Topic Paragraph, List of 5 Academic Sources, series of short research papers, and In-class Presentation. Topic Paragraph + List of 5 Academic Sources.  You should choose a cultural group that is of interest to you and that is represented in the anthropological literature. You may elect to focus on a group of people anywhere in the world, but you must be able to argue that they comprise a “cultural group” and find enough ethnographic (anthropological studies) sources to answer the assigned questions about the group (do NOT choose an archaeological culture). Obvious entry points into this assignment are ethnic groups (i.e. the San of southern Africa, the Maasai of east Africa, the Amish, or the Fore of Papua New Guinea), but you may also choose to study a subcultural group if you prefer (such as a diasporic community in a certain city, graffiti artists, drag queens, or anarchists, etc.). NOTE: Please note – you must each pick a different topic. The link to the Google Spreadsheet to choose your topic is found in the Paper/Presentation module. To ensure that no one’s information disappears from the spreadsheet, please email me your topic immediately after filling out the spreadsheet. Submit a single TYPED, double-spaced paragraph that states the group that will be the topic of your final paper, some preliminary information on the group, and why you are interested in learning more about this group. In addition, submit a list of FIVE academic sources (using APA format) that you will use in your research on the group. You should also provide 2-3 sentences that annotate (summarize and discuss why the specific source should be useful to you). Academic sources can include books, journals, or dissertations. Books are available at the library; e-books, and journal articles are available through electronic databases via the library webpage. If you are uncertain as to whether a source is considered “academic,” please inquire with me or with a research librarian at FRCC. You can also do a Google Scholar search for “anthropology+your topic” or “anthropological studies+your topics” and see what pops up – many articles and books can be found this wayNOT ACADEMIC SOURCES: Any website (especially WIKIPEDIA), videos (documentaries), magazines, encyclopedias (print or online), newspapers, the textbooks, etc. are NOT considered to be academic sources. Basically, if it’s not a book, journal, or dissertation, it’s not an academic source. If you are convinced you have found a truly academic website or video, please check with me first. When you turn in your topic paragraph, you will choose Option 1 or Option 2 for completing the research. In-class Presentation (5 minutes): 60 points Due: Uploaded to the Week 9 Discussion by Wednesday, November 20th at 8pm You will provide a short video presentation to your classmates. Your presentation should follow the presentation guidelines and provide some background about your culture (with images including a map). You should also connect some of the major findings from your research to one of the concepts or themes discussed in class or the readings. You have a strict time limit (five minutes). You should practice timing your presentation ahead of time to ensure you meet the time limit. You may create a video, a voice over slide show (like the lecture videos using ScreenPal), a Prezi with voice included, etc. Just keep it at 5 minutes and make sure it can be uploaded or linked easily. NOTE: It is your responsibility to make sure your presentation post can be viewed by the instructor and your classmates. If your presentation cannot be viewed or heard (or the link doesn’t work) and the issue is not resolved by the deadline, your presentation will be considered late. Instead of turning in a single research paper, you will turn in a series of Short (2-3 page, doublespaced) Research Papers: 20 points each; 100 points total When writing each paper, follow the rubrics and use APA style! 1. Introduction to the group (due Monday, October 28th at 11:59pm) Who are they? Where do they live? On what basis can they be viewed as a single, cultural group of people? What “norms” characterize this group? 2. How has the group been studied? (due Monday, November 4th at 11:59pm) What questions have they asked and what findings have they circulated? Be as thorough as possible – a quick literature search can answer this. This should briefly summarize several studies, not just one anthropologist. 3. Change, Challenges, Globalization (due November 11th at 11:59pm) What challenges and prospects do they face as a group? How has the group adapted (or not) to changing economic, social, technological, environmental, or other conditions? For details about the definitions of globalization, please refer to the text. 4. The group in popular media (due November 18th at 11:59pm) (e.g. New Yorker, New York Times, NPR programs, travel sites, Wikipedia, National Geographic, museums, performance art, publications, movies, television, books)? What possibilities and constraints do these representations afford the group? Do they contest or embrace these representations? How? NOTE: You may refer to non-academic sources for this paper ONLY. 5. How does this relate to themes in the class? (due December 5th at 11:59pm) The paper should in some way incorporate or showcase your knowledge of the concepts, theories, and methods presented this semester in ANTH101. Your references cited section should only include references you actually cited throughout your paper. Your paper should include in text citations done in the correct format. The references cited section should also be done in the correct format with no errors. It should include a minimum of five academic references. Note that you need a minimum of five academic references for the entirety of the five papers, not for each paper. If there are less than five by the last paper, points will be deduced from all the previously graded papers. Please use the style guide for APA – under D2L, Resources – Writing Resources, Style Guide). If you are more familiar with another style guide, please come and talk to me first.
