PHIL101: Introduction to Philosophy
Touchstone 1.1: Philosophical Thinking
Step 1: Define Philosophy
Philosophy is the systematic study of fundamental questions about life, knowledge, values, and existence. It encourages critical thinking, logical reasoning, and open dialogue about human experiences. Rather than offering simple answers, philosophy invites reflection and exploration to deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world (Philosophy and the Human Condition, n.d.).
The three main branches of philosophy are epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics. Epistemology is the study of knowledge—what we know, how we know it, and what it means to know something. Metaphysics explores the nature of reality, including existence, time, space, and what is ultimately real. Ethics, also known as moral philosophy, investigates how humans should act and what constitutes a good life (Branches of Philosophy, n.d.).
