Benchmark – Conflict Analysis and Resolution
Introduction
Conflict is an inevitable part of human interaction, especially in interpersonal and organizational relationships. When not managed constructively, conflict can escalate into destructive patterns that damage trust and communication. Understanding conflict styles and their impact on relationships is essential for resolution and growth. This paper explores a recent destructive conflict I experienced, examines my conflict management style through personal assessment and interviews, and proposes an alternative, constructive style to resolve similar conflicts in the future. Scholarly resources and theories from Interpersonal Conflict by Wilmot and Hocker are used to support this analysis.
Destructive Conflict Summary
The conflict I experienced occurred at my workplace between myself and a colleague regarding responsibilities for a joint project. The tension began when I noticed that my colleague, Mark, consistently failed to meet deadlines, which affected my ability to complete my part of the work. Frustrated, I confronted him during a team meeting, accusing him of being unprofessional and careless. This confrontation led to defensiveness, a breakdown in communication, and division among team members.
