Reading widely keeps one up to date, and writing reviews encourages one to evaluate the literature critically for its strengths and weaknesses, and to distill relevant, new information. A good scientific review gives one an in-depth understanding of a subject, exposes key gaps warranting future research, and expands one’s mastery of their specialty. While a literature review may be 4,000 to 6,000 words, article reviews are much shorter, and form the basis of a more-comprehensive literature review. According to Central Michigan University (2022), an article review is written to identify, summarize, and evaluate an author’s position on a subject. The review should make positive and/or negative judgments regarding the article’s content, go beyond a “gut” feeling, and be based on the writer’s knowledge gained through education and readings – including other articles on the subject. The University of Illinois, Springfield (UIS, 2022) posits a journal article review must go beyond a simple summary, and provide a deeper-level evaluation. UIS provides these approaches to consider when reviewing a journal article: Evaluate the article’s purpose and argument Evaluate the presentation and organization of the information Evaluate the methods used for appropriateness Evaluate the data (are the calculations correct; are there errors of fact/interpretation; has the author used cited literature appropriately?)
