Slide 1: Understanding Values, Ethics, Morals, and Laws

Slide Content:

  • Values: Personal beliefs that guide behavior
  • Morals: Societal or cultural beliefs about right and wrong
  • Ethics: Professional standards and principles
  • Laws: Formal rules established by governing bodies

Speaker Notes: Values are deeply personal and unique to each individual—they shape how we perceive the world. Morals, on the other hand, are generally shared across cultures and define what society considers right or wrong. Ethics refer to the professional guidelines that help ensure consistency and integrity within a field—such as the ACA or APA codes. Laws are enforceable rules that mandate acceptable behavior. While these concepts often overlap, they can also conflict, requiring professionals to carefully navigate situations to uphold legal and ethical obligations.
