Scenario 1: You are a new graduate, and a newly hired staff registered nurse (RN) on a hospital unit. As weeks pass during your orientation, you have been hearing that more experienced RNs complain about constantly having to precept new RNs and feel "burned out." They also voice that there are other equally skilled and capable RNs on the unit that are not given this additional orientee responsibility for unknown reasons. To add to this stress, you overhear that the preceptors do not receive any further compensation for taking on an orientee. They have shared this frustration for years with the same nurse manager who seems disinterested in creating a fair solution, stating, "that's the way it has always been, and I have bigger issues that require my time." Unfortunately, this stress and dissatisfaction has increasingly gotten worse recently due to higher staff turnover and has negatively impacted overall staff retention and morale. You are a firm believer that leadership is not only for those in designated authority positions and value the experienced staff RNs' time and feelings. How could you, as the new graduate, apply a leadership framework to this situation to support the unit and work toward a successful outcome?
