Mainstreaming often encourages higher academic expectations. Children with learning disorders placed in regular classrooms may benefit from exposure to more rigorous curriculum standards and the motivation to keep up with their peers. They might also be more engaged in learning when in an environment with peers who model appropriate behaviors and academic success. Prepares children for real-world environments, where they will interact with people of all abilities. It helps them build resilience and adaptability by navigating more typical educational settings. A drawback of mainstreaming children with learning disorders is that classrooms often lack the individualized attention that children with learning disorders need. Despite the best intentions, teachers in regular classrooms may not be trained to address the specific needs of children with learning disabilities. As a result, these children may struggle to keep up with the class pace or fail to receive the tailored support that would allow them to thrive academically. For some children, being in a classroom with a standard curriculum and a larger student-to-teacher ratio may be overwhelming. They may feel frustrated, anxious, or embarrassed if they cannot keep up with the lessons or if they require more time to process information. A balanced approach that includes support both within the regular classroom and through special education services (such as push-in services, where specialists work with students in the regular classroom) may be the most effective.
