PSY 4301-21.01.01-1A25-S1, Physiological Psychology Unit V Discussion Board: Due 3 August 1.If you were inventing and researching a new cure for one of the neurological or psychological disorders presented in this unit, which would you choose, and why? 2.What avenue would you pursue in your treatment based on your readings, and why? (e.g. drug or procedure that targets a specific brain structure, mechanism of action, neurotransmitter, etc.) ***Discussion to questions 1 and 2 must be a minimum of 175 word total combined** 3.Create a response for the post below in a minimum of 75 words. “This topic is something that I can appreciate as I have several family members who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer-related Dementia. Alzheimer’s disease produces severe degeneration of the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, neocortex, frontal cortex, and temporal lobes. Because of the widespread areas affected, isolating and treating the disease is difficult. Currently, there is no cure, and treatment mainly focuses on slowing the progression and patient comfort. Cure of Alzheimer's Dementia requires the reversal of both the loss of memory and the impairment of cognition to levels that are normal for the patient’s age and cultural background. Given an unlimited budget and sufficient medical staff, I would approach the treatment and cure by focusing on the brain-derived neurogenic factor (BDNF) and improving the delivery method using Clathrin, a naturally occurring protein, to increase the hippocampal BDNF levels. Recent studies show this process can significantly enhance the body’s ability to resist changes in brain cells affected by Dementia. This treatment, coupled with intranasal insulin and lithium, would theoretically restore the brain’s cells and glucose levels to pre-diagnosis levels. This would improve the functioning of the frontal cortex and temporal lobes providing a more normal lifestyle”. ************************************************************************************************************************************** PSY 4305-21.01.01-1A25-S1, Psychological Assessment Unit V Discussion Board: 1.Throughout this unit, we have discussed the concept of malingering or faking cognitive deficits. Give an example of a simple procedure that a neuropsychologist might use to detect faking bad on memory tests. 2. How would you be able to identify if an individual was faking bad on a neuropsychological test? ***Discussion to questions 1 and 2 must be a minimum of 175 words total combined** 3.Create a response for the post below in a minimum of 75 words. “Malingering, or the intentional faking of cognitive deficits, can be a significant concern in neuropsychological assessments, particularly in contexts such as legal cases or disability claims. After reading our textbook, The Forced Choice Test seems like a good method for neuropsychologists to use when trying to detect malingering. This method involves presenting an individual with pairs of items, one of which was previously shown and one that is new. The individual is asked to choose the previously shown item. Because this task is relatively easy, individuals with genuine memory impairments typically perform well. However, someone who is malingering might perform very low, indicating intentional underperformance. Identifying malingering involves analyzing patterns of performance across various tasks, looking for inconsistencies, and comparing scores to established validity thresholds. Through these methods, neuropsychologists can detect when an individual is not putting forth genuine effort or is intentionally faking deficits”.
