Prompt In Discussion Board 3, you summarized the results for one of five subjects profiled in the PBS show "Finding Your Roots" and connected their family histories back to our class material. Since the show explores family roots, it inevitably deals with racial and ethnic identity and often includes an immigration story. Now, it's time to do the same for yourself. In a short (2 - 3 page) personal reflection essay, discuss what a "Finding Your Roots" episode would show for you. You don't have the time or resources to do the type of research they do in the show, but you may want to have a conversation or two with a someone who knows about your family history. Remember that the focus of our class is on race and ethnicity, so that's what you should be focusing on. Share what you already know. Share what you want to find out. Discuss what primary sources would be needed to find answers (think about the types of sources they use in the show, and remember that oral histories are primary sources too). Discuss how you and your family fit into the story of American history that we've learned about this semester. If you do not want to focus on yourself, that's ok. Please choose a friend to focus on instead. I do want this to be about someone you actually know. If that's an issue, contact me ASAP. Check out this video from the Finding Your Roots team on "8 Tips for Creating Your Family Tree." We're really only focusing on tips #1 and #7 in this assignment, but I thought it might be helpful. Formatting Instructions and Tips 2 - 3 double-spaced pages (1/2 page over ok) The paper should incorporate one Module 3 primary source from the course that speaks to some aspect of your family roots. If none of the Module 3 primary sources are appropriate for your roots, then talk to me so I can advise you on what to do. If the this requirement is not fulfilled, the essay may not earn a passing score. If you and/or your family came to the United States within the last 50 years, be sure that you have reviewed the course content and readings from Week 15. That's the relevant period that I will except you to incorporate and refer to in your reflection. Since this is a personal reflection essay, you are welcome and encouraged to use first person voice, so "I" and "me" are fine here. This is not a research paper. You're considering what additional research would be necessary to make your episode of the show, but you're not actually doing the research. But, if you don't know much at all about your family history, then you should start by talking to someone who does. Cite any words that are not your own with quotation marks and basic parenthetical citation (Author, page number). Any plagiarism will result in severe point deductions and reporting to the Campus Disciplinarian. Uploading and Late Work Please upload the actual electronic file to the Canvas assignment page. Upload the file to Canvas, NOT to Turnitin.com. This is your final. If you miss the deadline, contact me ASAP. There may be the possibility for a small extension. But then I will have to put a 0 in for the assignment in the grade book, and you won't be able to pass the class. Don't do this. Talk to me if you're struggling.
