Popular Culture, Media & Identity Essay (1 @ 30 points) This assignment invites you to examine how specific elements of popular culture shape personal or group identity within American society. You are to discuss the impact of music, fashion, art, social media or other aspects of popular culture and how they function as cultural forces that influence identity formation -- individual and collective. For example, you may look back at the identities and identity formation shown in the film, Generation Like, that was part of Week 2 material, if there is an element in the film that resonates with your analysis. You may also integrate your experience with identity; however, that should not be the sole source of your analysis. Remember to connect course concepts related to the topic. Do not merely tell us what you experience is/was. In your essay, discuss how that experience serves as evidence, along with course concepts, to examine popular culture and identity. The goal of the assignment is to help students critically analyze the relationship between popular culture, media, social media, and identity and to articulate your findings on this relationship (from readings, the film, your experience) in a well-structured essay.
