Please write an essay answering ONE (1) of the following questions. Essays should be between 1500 - 2000 words (or approximately 6 - 8 pages in length), well-written, concise, and backed with concrete examples. Regarding citations, you can either footnote or indicate the author and page number in parentheses. You must provide references/citations for all quotes or substantive information, and you are not allowed to use any sources beyond the assigned reading and the lectures. Prompt to choose from: Reviewing the period from Reconstruction to the 1930s, in what ways have Black visions of freedom differed and changed over time? How has class, gender, and context shaped these different visions of freedom. Please answer this question by comparing and contrasting the ideas of at least three (3) of the following: Ida B. Wells and the antilynching movement, Black Club women, W. E. B. DuBois, T. Thomas Fortune, the UNIA, the African Blood Brotherhood, Ella Baker and the Black Cooperative Movement, and Angelo Herndon and the Communist Party. African Americans entered the whirlwind or ‘nadir’ of the 1890s focused on four demands: land, education, the vote, and security (which is to say protection from violence and economic security in the form of decent wages, job security, etc.) What strategies did Black social movements adopt and where did they succeed? Where and how were they defeated? What were the consequences of defeat (or success)? Finally, how did women and men, working-class and elites understand and experience these struggles differently? In other words, how did gender and class shape movement strategies, visions, and outcomes? Your structure should include an introduction with a thesis statement, bodies, and a conclusion. Please be sure to bolden your thesis statement, include citations (another announcement will be made), use 12 Times New Roman, and answer every part of the prompt you choose. For citations, you can use MLA or Chicago Style (just be consistent); however, for MLA, you will need a bibliography (does not count in the word limit). For those who choose to do Chicago Style citations, footnotes suffice and there is no need for a bibliography. Below are examples for book/article/lecture. Book/Article Format: Footnote Citation Rubric: (Author’s first name and last name), “[chapter title or article title]”, in (add editors full name if any), [insert book title or journal title in italic] (City, State: Publisher, Date), [page number]. Footnote Citation Example: Barbara Ransby, “Harlem during the 1930s: The Making of a Black Radical Activist and Intellectual” in Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement: A Radical Vision (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2024), 73.***************** Lecture Example: Footnote Citation Rubric: Firstname Lastname, “Title of Lecture” (Location, date). Footnote Citation Example: Robin Kelley, “Women’s Era” (UCLA, 01/21/25). If you need more help, please direct yourself to Purdue Owl ***************** For citing lecture in MLA, please see below.
