Topic: For my project, I aim to study the circumstances of Jews as a minority within the Ottoman Empire and the larger Middle East in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Jewish communities in the Ottoman millet system encountered several difficulties while retaining a certain level of religious freedom. These difficulties oftentimes included social and economic limitations, along with occasional instances of violence and even persecution. In spite of these obstacles, Jewish communities still managed to thrive and make important contributions to society overall. Their experiences were further influenced by the intricate interactions between local politics as a whole, economic circumstances, and even broader policies surrounding imperialism. I intend to give an overall view of the Jewish experience in this period by looking at a range of areas of Jewish life, including legal status, economic duties, and connections with both Muslim and Christian groups.
