Reflective Paper Assignment You will write a short (3-4 page) paper reflecting on your personal experiences and connecting those to philosophical material covered in this course. Goal: To reflect on personal experience and contextualize and situate them within scholarly philosophical work. Task: Write a short paper. Criteria: Refer to instructions and rubric below. Section 1: You will begin by narrating something personal in your life – perhaps some action you’ve taken – that is a response to some environmental concern you have. Here are some examples – you certainly don’t have to stick to these, these are just suggestions: You were/ are/ going to be vegetarian or vegan for some amount of time. It could be forever, or it could be a one-week experiment, or it could be something like once a week (such as “meatless Mondays”). You gave up single use plastics – again this could be long term or for a certain amount of time. You donate(d) to some environmental organization in some form. You participate(d) in a tree planting activity. You participate(d) in a beach clean-up activity. You bike/ walk/ use public transport instead of driving long distance. You drive an electric vehicle. You compost/ grow your own garden. You had a life-changing experience with nature. Write about this in the first section as follows: Talk about the personal step you’ve taken or plan to take (like any of the suggested ones above) in some detail – share how exactly you go about doing it and the scope of the action. (2 pts.) Then discuss your reasons for why you chose to do it and what motivated you – don’t be too brief here, write at least 7-8 sentences. (3 pts.) Section 1 can be half to one page. Section 2: Next, in a page or page and a half, discuss one or two authors’ arguments from the course material (not the internet articles provided for the video project) and connect them to your personal action discussed in Section 1. If you can’t find a direct connection between a course article and your chosen action, you might have to do some additional background reading that will help you connect the dots. Please also feel free to talk to me about it. You will be graded on: Accuracy of representing the chosen authors’ views and arguments in your own words as far as possible. Quotes should be used sparingly (not more than four short ones). Do not miss the author's central point of the article. (3 pts.) Clarity of explaining concepts (2 pts.) Coherently tying together your personal action and the authors’ views (3 pts.) Section 3: Wrap it all up in a succinct conclusion in about half a page. (2 pts.) -- Points will be deducted for problems with writing mechanics/ grammar/ spelling/ going too far off from the suggested length. Your paper should be in Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double spaced with 1 inch margins all around. You should include a bibliography at the end. Any format (MLA/ APA/ Chicago) is fine as long as you're consistent throughout the paper.
