This allows for the best decision to be made without unknown bias or different opinions on the matter. We are all human so the one thing we can do for our patients is make sure that the decision we are making for them is the best one. There are certain elements that go into evidence-based practice such as clinical expertise/expert opinion (ASHA, 2024). This is the knowledge, judgement, and critical reasoning that one has been acquired through training and your professional experience (ASHA, 2024). The next component that needs to be gathered is evidence from the literature and from data and observations collected on the individual patient (ASHA, 2024). The next step is to gather the thoughts of the patients, the caregivers, and the loved ones to gather their opinions (ASHA, 2024). Some people have a unique set of personal, cultural circumstances, values, priorities, and expectations on how they should receive treatment (ASHA, 2024). When all three components are brought together, clinicians make informed and evidence-based decisions (ASHA, 2024). This allows clinicians to provide high quality services that reflect the interests, values, needs, and choices of individuals with communication disorders (ASHA, 2024).
