PART 1.   When are you most aware of your age? This might seem like a strange question, but think about it for a minute. Often, we become aware of things about ourselves when we are around people who are different from us in some way. So, maybe you notice your age when you are with your grandparents because they can't do some of the things you can do or they have different opinions than ones you and others in your age group have learned to accept as appropriate or normal or necessary. For this assignment, I'd like you to think about how your age and your generational identity might affect how you interact with co-workers. Try to think of a time when your age became an issue (good or bad) at work. (If you cannot think of a workplace example, think of one with your family or at school.) Look back at page 15 in the textbook and identify which generation you belong to (i.e., millennial, Generation Y, etc.). Then identify which generation the person you were interacting with belongs to. Please try to tell me what it was about your age difference that lead to the issue you identified (again, good or bad). PART 2.  Watch the following TED talk.  Chip Conley TED Talk on Age Diversity in the Workplace What is your general reaction to what Chip Conley is saying about how different generations can/should work together? What do you think about his idea of an "irrelevancy gap"? How do you think we should overcome this gap (or should we overcome it)? What does he mean by a "relevant elder" or a "modern elder"? What does he say, in general, about how the generations can improve the workplace by accepting each other's strengths? Finally, can you think of a way to incorporate "mutual mentorship" into your own current or future work life so people from different generational backgrounds can support and enhance each other's work? PART 3.  Age discrimination is only one type of discrimination that can be discussed when we talk about fair employment practices. Your book talks about some other really important types of discrimination as well.
