Part 1  Please read/watch these in order Lecture Reading 1 - David: Oath of the Horatii Reading 2 - Ingres: The Grande Odalisque In the second half of the 18th century, some artists turn away from the excesses of the Rococo and find inspiration in the ancient world, preferring works of art that teach historical moral lessons and adopt a strict linear style.   (1) First, describe the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in France--how is this institution able to exert control over the art viewed in Paris in the late 18th and 19th centuries?  What kind of art did the Academy prefer?   (2) Next direct your attention to Jacques-Louis David's Oath of the Horatii.  What was new and unique about this work of art?  What inspiration did David take from the classical world?  What is the message of the painting?   (3) Finally, let's look at Ingres' La Grande Odalisque.  What relationship does this painter and painting have to David's work?  In what ways is Odalisque similar and different from Neoclassical works such as Oath of the Horatii?  Explain the way that Ingres uses a "colonial lens" to depict this scene.    Part 2 Lecture Outside Video Reading 1 - Édouard Manet.pdf (1) Using Gustave Courbet's The Stonebreakers (1849), explain what the term "Realism" (please note the capital "R") means in the history of art.  Select 2-3 specific details from the work of art and describe the way they contribute to the realism of the painting.   Turn your attention to the Outside Video and reading. (2) What does Manet's Olympia represent?  Why was it so controversial?  How does it compare to earlier female nudes in the history of art?  Who is Laure and how does she figure into the overall meaning of the painting (note: this is discussed in the video)?
