Part 1: 1) What does the term Renaissance mean?  How does the architect and theoretician Filippo B ...

Part 1: 1) What does the term Renaissance mean?  How does the architect and theoretician Filippo Brunelleschi fit in to the history of the early 15th century Renaissance in Italy?  Name one of his most significant works and describe how they express the idea of the "Renaissance."  Please use specific visual/architectural details (HINT: I discuss this in the class lecture) (5 pts) (2) The Medici family are arguably the most significant artistic patrons in the western world.  According to the PBS documentary, what made their approach to patronage different than those that came before? (5 pts)  (3) Examine Donatello's bronze David.  According to the PBS documentary, how did the statue express the ambitions and beliefs of the Medici family (as well as their challenge to the social order)?  How is Florence's approach to sexual culture expressed in Donatello's David?  In your outside reading, Professor Sarah Blake McHam has a slightly different perspective.  Using a direct quote from the text, briefly describe her interpretation for Donatello's David (HINT: I give you the answer to this in the short video on the outside reading page) (5 pts) (4) Finally, turn your attention to Masaccio's Holy Trinity.  How does the artist use linear perspective to more fully engage the viewer in the work of art?  What is the relationship between Roman architectural monuments and Masaccio's painting? (HINT: I discuss this in my lecture)   (5 pts) Outside VIdeo  Lecture Video  Outside reading Part 2: Please watch the outside video.  This week we focus on Renaissance Italy under the patronage of Lorenzo de' Medici (Lorenzo the Magnificent).  Lorenzo was not just the head of the Medici family, but a poet and philosopher in his own right.  He was deeply interested in pursuing humanism (the revival of classical learning). 1) How does the mythological work of Sandro Botticelli reflect the interest of the Medici family during this time?  What happens to Botticelli during the second half of his career?  Who was Girolamo Savonarola and what influence did he have on Botticelli's work (trivia: when I went to graduate school in Italy, my university was in Piazza Savonarola)? 2) How does Botticelli's artwork change during this later period in his life? Next let us turn out attention to Venice. Take a close look at Gentile Bellini's San Zaccaria Altarpiece (outside reading).   3) Explain the term "sacra conversazione" and describe how it applies to the San Zaccaria Altarpiece.  Who is included in the "sacra conversazione"?   4) How does Bellini use painted architecture in this altarpiece?  What relationship does the painting have to the architecture of the church it is within?  Finally, what is the significance of the ostrich egg (?!!)? Note: all of the answers to these questions are in the outside reading.  Please make sure to put the answers in your own words, do not copy and paste from the document.  If you do use quotations, you should name the author as Dr. Sally Hickson.    For instance: in the article Dr. Sally Hickson argues that the significance of the ostrich egg is "xyz".
