Paper 3 The goal of Paper 3 is to create a fully formed research paper that could be submitted for review of potential scholarship. As such, it is expected that research done in Paper 1 or 2 is likely to be replaced or elevated before the Paper 3 submission. The combination of Papers 1 and 2 is expected to make up about half of the final draft for Paper 3, with the remaining pages being devoted to new work that presents and refutes a counterargument(s) and proposes a possible solution, arguing that solution as the best possible solution at present given available information/your research. In a basic break down: Introduction paragraph(s) spent defining the problem (its effects and characteristics) and answering the “so, what?” question. spent on a historical casual analysis of the problem or on a literature review analysis of comparative studies presenting a claim regarding a possible solution to the problem based on its definition and causes/available information; presenting a credible counterargument(s) to the proposed solution that is followed by a refutation of that counterargument. Conclusion Paper 3 will be a 20+ page argumentative research paper (roughly 4,500 words – 5,000 words in length). The expectation is that Paper 3 will be a detailed essay that meets the expectations of a college-level term paper.  You can review the grading rubric here for Paper 3 here: WR2, S24 - Paper 3 - Rubric.pdf It is encouraged that you read the rubric before submission. The rubric can be used to check if you meet the expectations of the assignment.  Paper 3 Checklist Checkbox Item Needed Paper 3 requires  Introduction with a clear thesis statement at the end Body paragraphs for your paper Conclusion Works Cited *You may include section heads for this paper, but they should not be used in replacement of transition sentences. Choose one form of literature analysis framework: 1.     Historical Analysis: Your paper should embrace the complexities of the causes that have lead up to the issue/problem you've chosen for Paper 1. The paper should be guided by a strong, controlling thesis statement, which makes a clear, yet sophisticated, argument as to what the major causes to the problem(s) is (essentially: contextualize the issue).  OR 2.     Literature Review: Your paper should embrace the complexities of the issue/problem you've chosen for Paper 1. The paper should be guided by a strong, controlling thesis statement, which makes a clear, yet sophisticated, argument as to what available literature claims regarding the issue’s source(s), and how your claims are unique from that body of literature (essentially: contextualize the issue).  Provide sufficient, effective, and developed textual support (quotes, paraphrases, and examples) to support the analysis and argument being presented. Comprehensively explain, and effectively contextualize, the significance of the support to the claims being made (essentially: contextualize the evidence) Consist of well-developed, complete, and focused body paragraphs / Be organized in a clear and effective way [based on the thesis statement] / Demonstrate skillful critical thinking and fully-develop and fully-defend essential argumentative claims The format for the rough draft and final draft maybe in either MLA or APA form. You can use the Purdue Owl Labs Sample PapersLinks to an external site. as an example. You must NOT mix the two formats in your final draft and should check thoroughly before submission. This includes checking all citations, headers, and writing style. This includes adding page numbers to in-text citations. Mixing the two formats and/or failing to uphold the standards of the chosen format will result in docked points in both the Works Cited/Format/Proof. and In-Text citation categories. The sample papers provide instructions and information regarding formatting in their comments. You should check your work for grammatical and spelling errors beforehand, though it will not heavily count against you in this draft if there are a few missed things.   This is an argumentative research paper focused on presenting the best possible solution given your research on available information. This is not a persuasive essay for one side, nor is it a defense for multiple solutions. Make sure your paper is addressing this key aspect of the prompt.
