throughout this course, you will be asked to document and reflect on your experience in the class. The intent of this activity is (a) to enable you to track your progress with your Environmental Footprint project, and (b) to invite you to reflect on the terms, concepts, and processes you learned about throughout the week. Your journal post is intended as an exercise in metacognition or thinking about your own thinking and learning in this course. Your submissions will be evaluated by how well you cover your progress on making at least five lifestyle changes to lower your environmental footprints, and how clearly you identify and discuss content learned over the week. To prepare for this assignment, Review Chapter 5: Sustaining Our Freshwater Resources. Review Chapter 6: Sustaining Our Oceans. Ensure you have participated in all discussions and completed all other assignments and activities for the week. Complete the following: Discuss each of your five specific environmental footprint reduction actions or habits and give an update on what progress was made between Week 2 and the end of Week 3 for each item. If you experienced challenges along the way, identify them and map out a plan to move closer toward that original goal, if possible. If, after some time, an action does not seem like it will work, then you can choose a new action to replace it. Explain your learning from the 3rd week of class. What are three new concepts or terms that you learned about? How have your outlooks on managing freshwater resources and our oceans changed because of this new knowledge? What topics might you be interested in learning more about in the future? Look ahead to Week 4 where we will be examining issues related to our atmosphere and climate, including air pollution and global climate change. Discuss some ways that these new topics might intersect with what you learned this week about water management, including our oceans. How do the subjects of water management and our atmosphere and climate impact each other? The Environmental Footprint Report and Reflections on New Learning, Week 3 journal,

Step 1: To prepare for your assignment, Ensure you have completed the Water Quality Monitoring virtual lab. Begin by visiting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s webpage How’s My Waterway and follow these steps: Read over the main page to familiarize yourself with the site. Move your cursor to the “How’s My Waterway?” widget on the page and type in your current home address. (If that does not work for any reason, or if you are currently stationed overseas, just choose a previous home address or the home address of a family member for this assignment.) Click the Go button. In the page that appears, you will see a map that includes a region surrounded by a dashed line. That shows your local watershed. To find the name of the watershed, hover before the list of water bodies next to the map. Your watershed’s name will be italicized. Now, use the website to research your watershed. Find the stream, pond, or other water body closest to your home that is marked by different colors. If the closest water body is unmarked, follow it downstream to the first section that is marked. Is your closest water body good, impaired, or condition unknown? If it is impaired, click on it, and a box will appear with more information. For what uses is it impaired? For more details about that use, click on the listed uses for their definitions, and click on the lighter i in the darker circle for more details about that particular use. The box may also include information about the sources of impairment. You can click on their labels to read more about them, including a definition and what you can do to help with that issue. Finally, at the bottom of the box, you will see this option: View Waterbody Report. Click on the hyperlink to get further details about this water body, including plans in place to protect or restore water quality (click on any hyperlinks to view these plans). Record all the pertinent information in your notes; you will use this to write up your report. Step 2: Next, follow your local water body downstream until it joins the biggest stream or river in your watershed—the main river into which all the other tributaries flow. (If your local stream flows into a lake, use that instead. If your local water body is a small pond or lake, zoom out to find the closest large lake in your area instead.) Click on that larger river or lake to pull up the same information as you did for your nearest water body, above. Record all pertinent information in your notes. Step 3: Finally, see what else you can learn about your watershed online. Using the name of your major river or lake, do an internet search for “[name or river or lake] water quality”. You might also go to Google News and do the same search there. Maybe your river or lake has been in the news either due to cleanup efforts or because of new contamination events. Finally, try an internet search for “[name of river or lake] organizations.” Are there any nonprofit groups working to protect your watershed? If so, what are their names, what do they do, and how might volunteers get involved? Write Now, you are ready to write your Watershed Status Report. In your essay, Describe your watershed. Name your watershed. State where the watershed is located in the United States. Discuss what the water quality is like for the closest water body to your home. Make sure to include all the details shared in the preparation section. Describe what the water quality is for the largest river or lake in or near your watershed. Make sure to include all the details shared in the preparation section. Explain your overall assessment of the water quality in your watershed. Explain any plans and steps that are needed to protect the water quality in your watershed. Discuss what plans have been put in place to protect or restore water quality for your local water body and the watershed. Summarize what additional steps you think should be taken to address any water quality impairments present in your watershed. Provide information about any organizations active in your watershed working to safeguard local water quality, including what they do and how volunteers can get involved. Discuss the latest news stories, if any, about the health of your watershed. The Water Quality Monitoring Laboratory Follow-Up Assignment essay, must include a separate title page with the following in title case: title of essay in bold font Space should appear between the title and the rest of the information on the title page. student’s name name of institution (The University of Arizona Global Campus) course name and number instructor’s name due date must utilize academic voice. Issue: How does industrialization contribute to deforestation, leading to climate change Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed: Introduction: In this section, you will discuss your natural science issue and select resources that you can use to research the issue. This will lead you to the development of a research question related to your issue. Specifically, you should: Describe the issue in the natural sciences that you have selected to investigate. (How does industrialization contribute to deforestation, leading to climate change) Why is this issue significant? (You identified this issue in Module One, but how would you revise this piece now that you have received instructor feedback and investigated your sources?) Describe at least three science resources that you could use to investigate the issue you selected. Your sources must be relevant to your issue and must be of an academic nature appropriate for the issue. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your issue? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices? Based on your review of science resources, develop a specific question related to the issue you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about? Body: In this section, you will use the natural science resources that you selected to investigate your question, focusing on an appropriate audience and the scientific principles related to the issue. Make sure to cite your sources. Based on your research: Identify an audience that would be interested in your issue and the question you developed. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message, or who could best help in addressing the issue? Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand scientific terminology and principles, or will you need to explain them? How will you communicate effectively with your audience? Identify the natural science principle(s) that apply to your question and issue. For example, if your issue is global climate change, the principle you might identify is that the sun is the primary source of energy for Earth’s climate system. Explain how the principle(s) you identified apply to your issue and question. In other words, how are the natural science principle(s) you identified relevant to your question and issue?

In this final paper, you will consider the sustainability challenges that your home community currently faces and propose components of a plan tailored to meet those challenges. Think about your home community; this might be the community where you are living now, or a previous place that you identify with closely and still consider to be home (such as where you grew up). Drawing on your own memories and some online research, explore the challenges the community faces to becoming truly sustainable someday. In this paper, you will consider the sustainability challenges that your home community currently faces and propose components of a plan tailored to meet those challenges. You will map out specific, concrete changes (in policy, technology, or everyday life) that your community would need to take to achieve sustainability. Provide clear, detailed examples of strategies, drawn from all you have learned relating to this course’s five weekly themes. Your examples should be based on our current scientific knowledge and level of technology (in other words, no inventing a new energy source from lightning or a new, low-energy means of generating fresh water from the oceans). Your suggestions should be tailored to the particulars of your chosen community. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, proposing solar power throughout your town would not be highly effective. Finally, you will imagine what that sustainable future neighborhood, town, or region would look like. How would it be fundamentally different from today?  To prepare for this assignment, review all chapters of Bensel and Carbone’s (2020) Sustaining Our Planet text. In your assignment, craft a seven-paragraph essay that includes the following: Paragraph 1 Describe your home community, using the Arzaville description in past class discussions (Weeks 2 through 4) as an example of the kinds of information you might include. Discuss at least three of the biggest challenges that your home community faces on the path to achieving sustainability. Paragraph 2 Explain at least three concrete actions that your community might take that would enhance its ability to sustain local biodiversity and ecosystems. Paragraph 3 Discuss at least three specific steps your community might take to improve its capacity for sustaining local soils and sustainable agriculture. Paragraph 4 Describe at least three measures that might be taken by your home community to help sustain its freshwater resources. Paragraph 5 Propose at least three concrete steps your community might take to better sustain local air quality and reduce negative impact on the global climate. Paragraph 6 Discuss at least three specific actions your community might take to manage, reduce, or eliminate its waste more sustainably. Paragraph 7 Identify three specific actions that you might take, at the community level, to help support sustainability for your home place. Considering the strategies that you have shared in your essay, assess whether your community could achieve sustainability at some point in the future. Why or why not? The Envisioning Sustainable Communities final paper, must be at least 7 paragraphs in length (3 to 5 pages, not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA Style as outlined in the University of Arizona Global Campus Writing Center’s APA Style must utilize academic voice. Refer to the Academic Voice resource for additional guidance. must include at least 1 scholarly source, 1 credible source, and the class text. The Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor. Your instructor has the final say about the appropriateness of a specific source for a particular assignment.
