Read this short excerpt from Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin involving a confrontation between Simon Legree and Tom, the slave.  Compare this fictional account with Douglass's account of his confrontation with the overseer Covey in Chapter 10 of the Narrative. What do these accounts tell us about slave rebellion, its perils, and its rewards?  Should we take these accounts as inspiration?  As isolated instances in a sea of pain?   Compare the scale of these rebellions with the larger slave rebellions of Nat Turner and others.  How much was slavery a constant state of war between slaveowner and enslaved?

analysis and close reading of a primary document that you will be using in your portion of the final project, (my portion is on Armenians under Ottoman Rule). Use any primary document that is relevant to the course material and to the topic of your chosen final project. Identify the primary source you are using, and explain what type of source it is: example a petition to the Sultan, A letter to from a merchant, an excerpt from a memoir… etc, and place it in historical context. If possible Identify the writer. Give a short summary of what the document is about, or what the purpose of the document is. Do a close reading of the document, taking into consideration bias, tone, voice , audience, author, and give your analysis. Conclude your paper. The paper does not necessarily have to be in the above order, but needs to include all points. Be sure to refer to the text in your analysis, and back up any claims you make. It needs to have a title, and any outside information has to be cited.

Discussion VI: The Black Death Pandemic and the Early Modern World No unread replies. No replies. Hi Everybody, Welcome to the Gothic and Late Medieval Worlds As you will see when you start doing the readings about this period, after a period of optimism in the Gothic Era, we arrive into circumstances that are all too familiar to us right now in 2022 - a global pandemic of various forms of Yersinia Pestis, more commonly known and feared as the Plague, which, in the 14th century came to Europe after sweeping through Asia, India, and the Middle East and killed nearly 40% of European society in about 5 years in what came to be called The Black Death. One of the contemporaneous accounts of the onset of the Black Death in Europe was The Decameron, written by the Florentine author and early Renaissance Humanist Giovanni Boccaccio between 1349-1352 during the height of the Plague, who chronicled not only the facts of the horror of the onset of the Plague but also the fictional adventures of seven men and three women who fled Florence to "socially distance" with each other at a "deserted" country villa to try to escape the pestilence. I've placed a link to the Introduction to his work, which describes the onset of plague in Florence here: Decameron.docxDownload Decameron.docx For a perspective on an organized, centralized government's policies and attitudes towards plagues within their society in the Early Modern era, I've also provided you a link to an article on how the Mexica treated outbreaks of plague-like diseases in their society, prior to the invasion of Cortes and the Spanish, and the smallpox they brought with them - please read the article linked here: Aztec Kings Rules for Plagues.docxDownload Aztec Kings Rules for Plagues.docx To start your discussion for this unit, please read the Introduction to The Decameron as well as Aztec Kings' Rules for Plagues and then analyze and compare the reactions to the plague in Florence to your experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic - if you were to write such an Introduction to the "COVID-19 Decameron", for future generations, what would you tell them about your personal experience, how you can, or can't, relate to the experiences of the Florentines' that Boccaccio describes, and how would our experience in LA, California, and the US compare to Florence in the Black Death and to Mexica policies in the pre-Colombian era?  Then, please assess how or whether the Black Death impacted Western/Christian cultures and societies for those that survived, considering religion/faith, intellectual developments/philosophies, and social relations in its aftermath and then speculate what might result in our society in the future as a result of this pandemic.

Based on these readings and the podcast, how would you characterize the health care options in the late 18thcentury (late 1700s)? In other words, who were the potential healers and health resources? Why might someone need or want to turn to one over another? Compare and contrast the primary sources documents written by Carey and Jones/Allen by describing how they each characterize the social impact of the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. How did they describe the scenes of suffering, and who did they think was to blame? Pick one quote from each and explain how it represents their perspectives. Use the documents attached to respond to these two discussion questions. This will be AI detected heavily so no AI and no plagiarism please. 300-400 words each question. Keep the questions separate.

Introduction In History we refer to causes and consequences and show connections between events. Jose Ortega y Gasset wrote, "History is a system, the system of human experiences linked in a single, inexorable (interminable) chain." Our past is still part of the present. What we see today is not necessarily the result of recent actions choices. Aspects of our present result from centuries old choices or practices. Others derive from five or more decades and the rest from thirty years or less. The most significant and entrenched features of our current economic, political, and social situations have a long history. You will be expected to write at least one and one-half pages to two (1.5-2) pages maximum (single-spaced) or three to four (3-4) pages maximum (double-spaced) in response to the following prompt. Use a maximum 12-point font similar what is used in these instructions. Course Learning Outcome Analyze the impact of class, gender, ethnicity, culture, and politics as they relate to U.S. history from the late nineteenth century to the present through the use of historical data to form independent interpretations. Assignment Instructions Respond to the following prompt. You may upload a document or type into the text box. Our recent past has been described as a second Gilded Age. Compare and contrast the plight of workers in the Gilded Age from 1877 to 1900 with our most recent past, 1980 to the present. Is this a reasonable description? Why or why not? Remember, the effects of legislative policies take time to manifest themselves. Use the following points as a guide in writing your essay. Describe similarities and differences of working conditions and worker economic and political power in the Gilded Age and our most recent past? Be sure to describe lack of regulations (in the Gilded Age) and deregulation or lack of enforcement regulation (in the recent past 1975 and forward, but more so since the 1980s) contribute to similar outcomes in both periods? Analyze one area of similarity and its causes. Examples include low wages, employers' power, presence of unions, etc. Analyze the impact of immigrants and immigration on work and working conditions as well as how they are viewed by American workers. Support your response by using at least two primary documents provided in the course or reader, such as Jacob Riis' "How the Other Half Lives", "Mulberry Street", “William Graham Sumner Social Darwinism”, “Lucy Parsons on Women Revolutionary Socialism”, "The Tournament of Today", Henry George's "Progress and Poverty", “Bill Clinton on Free Trade and Financial Deregulation”, or “Pedro Lopez on His Mother’s Deportation”.
