Objective Imagine that you are a curator at a renowned institution like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) or the Getty Museum. Your task is to design a creative and cohesive exhibition using objects that you’ve studied in AHIS 1. The exhibition should focus on a singular theme that ties together various artworks from different cultures. You will also prepare a catalog to accompany the exhibition, which will include an introduction, images, descriptions of each object, and a citation page. Steps for Completing the Project Title of the Exhibition Choose a compelling title that captures the essence of your chosen theme The title should be creative and reflect the overarching idea connecting all the objects in your exhibition. Select 5 Artworks Choose five objects that you’ve studied in AHIS 1. These must come from different cultures and historical periods to ensure a diverse representation of art Ensure that each object ties into your exhibition theme. Introduction to the Exhibition (1-2 pages) Write an introduction that explains the theme of your exhibition. Discuss how each of the five selected objects relates to this theme. Think about the cultural, historical, or symbolic meanings that tie them together Provide a coherent narrative or argument about the significance of this theme in the context of the objects. Consider questions like: • What does the theme reveal about the human experience? • How do these artworks, though from different cultures, communicate similar ideas or values? • How does each culture’s approach to the theme reflect its own worldview or artistic tradition? Provide Detailed Information for Each Object Include an image of each artwork in your project. Be creative and use something like Canva PowerPoint, Adobe, etc, to create the format of your exhibition + catalog! • Alongside each image, provide the following identifying information: • Title of the artwork • Date of creation • Materials used (e.g., marble, bronze, etc.) • Culture or origin of the artwork (e.g., Ancient Egypt, Classical Greece, etc.) • A short description (2-3 sentences) explaining how the object fits into your exhibition theme. This should touch upon its significance, function, or symbolic meaning Citation Page Include a citation page at the end of your document or presentation. Make sure to properly cite the sources of information for your objects You may use any citation format (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.), but consistency is key. Key Considerations: Engage your audience through the theme and visual presentation. Ensure all objects selected directly relate to your theme. Provide correct and thorough information about each artwork. Maintain a clear narrative throughout the introduction and descriptions. Use citations to back up your descriptions and thematic analysis Create a Fun and Engaging presentation Feel free to design the project creatively using tools like Canva, PowerPoint, or Adobe to create a visually appealing catalog or presentation Your project should look professional and reflect the aesthetic quality of a real museum catalog that would be handed out to visitors.
