Invasive species are organisms that are introduced to a new ecosystem (one they have not evolved within) and once there, are able to rapidly reproduce because they have no competition. Due to this, they tend to dramatically alter the original community relationships. The purpose of this Discussion is to familiarize you with the number and variety of different invasive organisms and to evaluate the threat of these organisms and the difficulty in effectively controlling them. First, go to the National Invasive Species Information Center website and choose a species. Each student needs to choose a different species, so you should review the earlier posts before you choose. You can choose an aquatic species, plant, or animal from the Browse by Subject menu on the left side of the page. Create a new thread for your initial post and discuss the following: The name of the organism, both the common and scientific name. (Remember: scientific names should be italicized, which you can do in your post by selecting the HTML editor) A physical description of the organism AND a link to a photograph. Identify the native habitat of the organisms and where it is invading. Describe why it is a pest. Use evidence to support your statements.
