In the second section of this course, you've seen the United States go through tremendous change, from the founding of a new nation, through expansive economic growth and significant democratic inclusiveness (with limitations). The challenges centered on the increasing divide between the cultures and economies of Northern and Southern states, especially over the institution of slavery and implications for state sovereignty. The divisiveness, of course, led to the Civil War - a watershed in American history. ASSIGNED TOPIC In this Digital Timeline, use select events in the history of the United States from the earliest days of the new nation through the Civil War to illustrate the tug of war between efforts to expand liberty and the pushback from those resistant to the resulting changes in American life. Consider the broader picture to establish your theme, then select people or events that best illustrate that theme. 1. Here are the basics for your Digital TImeline: a. Time period - Your timeline must cover the period from the late 1700s through the Civil War, which ended in 1865. b. Theme - Your timeline must include a recognizable theme, using that theme to address the question stated above. c. Length - Your timeline must include a minimum of 14 slides. That can easily be broken down into 2 slides per chapter, plus an opening and closing slide, but feel free to use more if you find it helpful in exploring your theme. a. Each slide must include an image. b. Each slide must include text that explores the significance of the image - how does it help you present your argument and explore your theme? Do not simply describe the image - you need a reason for including it in your timeline that relates to your overall thesis. c. Be sure to have a title for your timeline and a banner picture. 2. Publishing Your Digital Timeline When you have completed your Digital Timeline, you need to publish it. Click on the blue button "Share" at the top right corner of your Digital Timeline. In the box that opens, click on "embed" at the top. Copy the embed code.
