Dr. Neela Bhattacharya Saxena Response paper 2 We are now discussing complex philosophical questions about time, reality, and the self. Make sure to read my notes in the announcement. Then choose any ONE of the following questions and write an essay (3 double-spaced typed pages). Make sure to check for grammar, and organization and give direct quotes from the text and the film. The title of the film Arrival seems to reflect the lines in Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life on page 92 when the narrator speaks of the arrival and departure of her daughter. Write an extended commentary on the story and the film focusing on the notion of time that the circular ouroboros-like symbol the heptapods present in the film. Why does Louise Bank “choose” to marry and have a baby even though she existed in simultaneous consciousness and was aware of the “future”? In one of the closing lines of the film, she asks: “If you could see your whole life laid out in front of you, would you change things?” Research the idea of “eternal recurrence” that the philosopher Nietzsche spoke of and write an essay to show how such a choice affirms life despite its painful aspects. A big part of Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life is about language, communication, and writing. Although the plot is about communicating with aliens, it shows how complex our own linguistic systems are, and we do not understand each other too well. Read the novella carefully to write about its theme of language and the sign systems we use.
