Initially, they promised to do basic information retrieval (e.g., fetching the weather report) and to incorporate centralized, always-on voice command into the smart home. But that is just the beginning. As these tools become more sophisticated, companies like Amazon and Google expect them to take on an increasing number and variety of tasks. One area of particular interest is health. For a number of years, data scientists have been exploring what always-on smart speakers can learn and infer about the people they listen to.
