Please focus on depth, development, and organization. Article The Benefits of Immigration What is your favorite non-American food? Chinese? Mexican? Indian? There are many different choices here in the Twin Cities. Most of which are run by immigrants or children of immigrants. Immigration is one of the most political and economic debates raised by the States. Immigration has had many positive impacts in our economy and society. Speaking from the point of view of an immigrant’s child. Many immigrants do the jobs others are most likely to decline such as farm work, field work. A statistic done by pewresearch.org, 84% of undocumented immigrant workers hold positions that are difficult to perform. In comparison, 62% of US citizens held these types of jobs. Also stated by pewresearch.org, in California, roughly 570,000 immigrants work in food production and distribution making up the nation’s food chain in 2017. As stated in the book in page 467 “86 percent of first-generation immigrant males participate in the labor force.” It appears that immigrants are filling low-skilled jobs due to a low level of education. A low wage is giving to those who choose to fulfill those positions. Many immigrants do the jobs others are not willing to work. But what is the counter argument for that? An example was giving both on page 474 and 475 of a citizen landscaper and an immigrant landscaper’s wage. That being an American landscaper charging up to $30 an hour, while the immigrant charging from $10 to $12 dollars an hour. That would make the client chose a cheaper service. They refer this as displacing the American working for charging a higher fee. When American workers quit their jobs, they disappear from the statistical sample on which economic models are built, and the immigrant’s economic costs and benefits would be calculated without reference to him. Living in a city like Minneapolis we are among many diverse cultures. People from Mexico, Ecuador, Spain, many parts of Africa, and China just to name a few. Being among a diverse culture allows us to experience the delight of a worldwide cuisine. Examples were stated in page 465, most exciting music in Paris is Afropop, street food of Germany is doner kebab, and so on. Diversity also helps us learn about different cultures, religion and customs. Although not everyone agrees that diversity can be a good thing to the country. There are people who would want the country to stay as it used to be. Many say, “immigration’s most important effects are social and cultural, not economic (page 477). Immigration makes an important contribution to the economy. Most immigrants go to different countries in hope of a better life for themselves and their fa milies. Often, they prepare themselves and create new jobs by forming new businesses, raising the productivity of U.S businesses. Children of those immigrants, some go to college and get a good profession, such as nursing, doctorates, lawyers, just to name a few. They are also contributing $30 billion in taxes, by third generation, $223 billion (Page 468.) Although, not everyone sees immigration as a good thing, it has its benefits.
