Description We have talked about quite a few environmental disasters in class so far. Climate change and disasters are of growing concern. An environmental disaster or ecological disaster is defined as a catastrophic event involving the natural environment disrupted by anthropogenic influence. We have briefly touched upon the overview, aftermath and consequences of some notable environmental disasters outlined below 1. Bhopal Gas Tragedy (1984) 2. Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster (1986) 3. Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (1989) 4. Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (2010) 5. Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster (2011) 6. Love Canal disaster The goal of this assignment to explore the environmental consequences of these disasters. You can pick one we have discussed in class or find one on your own that piques your interest but was not discussed in class. The website below gives an overview of some of the environmental disasters between 1912 and 2020 and briefly discusses some of the well known and some of the not so well known disasters. Once you have decided upon the one that moves you the most, please be sure to address the following in a write up in a Word file between 650-900 words. The list of references does not count towards word limit. A. Intro (1 Paragraph) : Define an environmental disaster and how it is different from a natural disaster. Why did you choose this particular one? (5 points) B. Overview (1 Paragraph): (What when how) Briefly describe the disaster you have chosen. What caused this disaster? When & where did this happen. Could this have been avoided? (10 points) C. Consequences (1-2 paragraphs): Critically review the aftermath of the disaster from the aspect of environmental health. How did it influence the terrestrial or aquatic ecosystem. What were some of the critical impacts? Explore the clean up process or remedial measures. How efficient was it? (20 points) D. Disaster management & Policy implications (1-2 paragraphs): From the perspective of disaster management, how well was this handled? Are some of the consequences or impacts still lingering in the community. What you think should have been done to better address the consequences of this disaster? Were there any policy implications? Generally, we become wiser after an incident or accident. Were there any laws enacted or policy measures incorporated to obviate such disaster in future? (15 points) E. Conclusion (1 paragraph): What is your take home from studying and analyzing this disaster? (5 points) F. References. You must have at least one peer-reviewed article, but at least three overall from a variety of sources of your choosing. It might be difficult to limit it to three so you can add more of course (5 points)
